Could not agree more. Heupel is our last leg while we still have some notoriety. Kids' parents still remember us being good but hs kids now do not (obviously). Coming soon the parents of hs kids will not remember us being good either and that's when I think we're truly a nobody.

On this point, that's why hiring Kiffin makes so much damn sense....idc how much you hate him or hate what he did before.

Exactly. I don’t think people realize how bad it is getting. Heup has to be the guy or we are in trouble.
not downplaying, but we've been saying this for a while. a long while. even before schianogate. and it was supposedly dead then too. it died again after last season.

it's not really a secret that enthusiasm amongst the big money has waned and most are seriously hedging their bets when it comes to giving to UT, and i don't blame them.

but none of those people have any interest, and certainly nothing to gain, in allowing it to fail, absolutely.

so, to say we're gonna be in trouble is probably accurate. but i think we've been in trouble, more or less, for about 6 years now. ever since losing that USCe/Vandy game in 2016...we've been in scramble mode. still are, though, we are probably in that "wait and see" area with this staff.

What is the head space of a big money booster that just says "that's it, I'm not supporting the team I love anymore!" Seems like if you have that kind of money you use it to make the team better. Wouldn't you see it as a challenge? I almost feel like the boosters have let us down to an extent. Is that not why we have hired a slew of bargain basement HCs and our stadium has become severely outdated? Idk
People with big time money use their head in financial decisions not their heart.

this staff will recruit much better than last once whats her face gets off her ass

Plowman?

I want to believe that but I see no reason to believe the staff will recruit well honestly. We need a donor to step up and pay the kids if that's going to happen and per the discussions above that doesn't sound likely. #1 player/QB just went to OSU because he was promised $1 mil once he did, we can't compete with that if we're not stepping up.

yes, that one

Does anyone else get the sads when you hear about a kid committing to another school and we're just sitting here like....

raw
I never "gets the sads" because I'm not a teenager, but it does make me sad and worried about our recruiting class. We need to win a few games like Mizzou.

If money wasn’t involved he probably goes there anyway. OSU is a championship contender every year. Vols aren’t gonna land the same recruits as them.

Jim wanted us like UVA/Vandy. He got it. I'm out of the loop now but Haslam pushed academics, not athletics 10 years ago. Hence why every building is named after a Haslam.

We haven’t competed for anything since 2007. We’ve been in trouble. Have you seen our coaching hires LOL. We haven’t operated as a big boy in college football for a long time.

Also trouble goes away as soon as someone starts putting Ws on the board.

Our defensive staff can recruit. I am not worried about their evaluations and recruiting. Offensive side is what I worry about. We will eventually get some studs for the defense. Probably Nolen and Caldwell and some others.

Off topic political comment incoming... But the state of California deciding its going to hold people who happen to start these fires accountable for all damages is absolutely absurd.

The state creates the world's largest game of jenga by completely mismanaging their forests for decades, and whatever poor soul happens to set it all ablaze is somehow fully responsible for the fact that the state is run by morons.

OK that's it.
I’m not sure those who have to fight these fires or who are otherwise impacted by them have a problem with holding the guilty accountable.

I can’t speak for CA specifically, but after traveling out west near a few fires and listening to the residents, I can tell you they’re fed up with people who cause them.

I would like to see some staff upgrades during silly season this off season. Idk if Heupel will do that because I believe he wants yes men to run his O. But RB and WR it would be nice to find guys with big boy ball experience at.

You don’t give the type of money that he does and not get buildings named after you. He has given hundreds of millions of dollars to the University.

That's whats up. I assume that's because of Garner. Is Heup not a good recruiter? I do worry that we have no big names on the offensive staff and I particularly worry about our OL coach.

I know that, that's totally cool, he just didn't want to invest in football as much. I was told he wanted a clean football program that prided on academics. I think we went awry after Butch with that but Dooley and Butch had great APRs iirc.

I want to see what they can do once the NCAA mess is cleared up. Then we can properly judge them.

Eventually you see it as a losing investment.

Of course the nature of donations...it technically can't be an "investment" at least legally, or the tax man would be on your back.

Our biggest issue with boosters has always been their desire to donate conditionally. Them wanting say in the inner workings of the AD and impacting hiring decisions despite being grossly unequipped to make those decisions.

We do not know yet. He could be or not be. Time will tell. But the defensive staff has good evaluators and coaches. Banks, Jean-Mary, Garner…I really like that side of the ball. I think we could have a mean defense soon with some talent upgrades.
