Could Baileys issue be moving at the pace Heupel wants?

I was at 7-8 wins I'm at 6-7 after last night.

7 is a good number, and I am sticking with it. We will get better QB play and still can beat USC, Vandy, and toss-ups of Mizzou, UK, and maybe Ole Miss.

Loved seeing us convert our RZ opportunities last night! We made it look easy once we got close. With Pruitt we would have needed a 4th down push on the goalline.

Wouldn't HH be next up? Especially seeing him in relief last night, it seems he's QB2, at the moment at least.

But we also heard JM was the best all camp, not just potential, but actual production, based on actual throws and such.

As some have mentioned before, maybe our QB is just not "all that" at this point either. Plenty of potential though and Hype needs more time with all of them I'd say. But I think it is realistic to think maybe we don't have an immediate stud on the roster either...hopefully we will by halfway point or at least Y2. Rush game can carry us some it seems.

I was told that a coin was flipped and Hooker won it and that's why he went in, that there is legitimately no back up QB right now. Is that true? Idk.

But here's what I do know, Hooker doesn't improve the passing game.

I think that's a mistake. But Heupel has coached Heisman winners and NFL players so what do I know?

I'm with you but hell based on the practice videos we got I had Bailey 1, Maurer 2, Milton 3, Hooker 4. But what do I know.

On another note, not only could Milton not read the field, throw the ball with touch, or throw the ball accurately, he didn't seem that mobile to me. Pretty confident HB can do just as much with his legs as Milton can.

Don't think he will. He knew he could get away with it last night. Think he was overconfident our WRs would be wide open 60 yds downfield. Obviously didn't happen or didn't see it.

I'd imagine future gameplans will put a clock in his head. Staff knows he won't have that kind of time in the future.

I don't know how you "know" that. The Spring game? Hooker was being reported as the most consistent passer of the group in the Spring and early in Fall camp as well. He isn't a WR playing QB like this is Kentucky.

My biggest concern right now, is that our staff went with Milton because of the tools, not necessarily because he is the best QB.

If that is the case, and he struggles next week, I hope that Heup will pull him and give HB a shot.

Another point about his laser passes. . . they may be causing a bigger issue than originally thought.

Knowing he has such a strong arm causes him to hold the ball a second longer, because he knows he can zip it 60yds on a line. He needs to identify his target sooner and throw with more touch, put a little loft on some of his throws. If he keeps holding it, flat-footed and motionless, he's gonna give up a lot of sacks in the SEC. It may be hard to correct for him, since he's always had that arm strength to play with.

I would have 0 issue with Heupel giving Bailey or Hooker a go, if Milton can't get away from those habits.

So no more finger pointing deep and more checkdowns too? Finger pointing seems right though if the play has broken down. Sorry if I seem confused. I'm trying to spiff up my QB analysis.

Based on what?

They've been top 20 in pace the last 2 years. They run ~77 plays/game. They hardly try to play ball control it would seem.

They also pass more than they run.

13th in the ACC last year converting 3rd downs.

Now...they do have a decent TOP (35-45th in the country) despite their offfense not trying to just hold the ball and not converting well. How so? Their defense has been top 3 on 3rd downs in the ACC the last few years. Their defense doesn't tend to allow the other team to keep the ball for long drives.

Based on the fact that any competent coach with FBS talent is going to do exactly what BGSU did to control the pace of the game.

I watched the opening two drives again. Those were really impressive.

And Milton showed burst on his runs on those two drives - some designed QB runs and he flashed some speed.

I don't think he gets to full speed very often - he is more methodical. Doesn't want to get hurt maybe?

But those drives were very good.

Hooker is the clear No. 2.

They want to give HB a year to develop.

HB is 3rd. So those wanting to see him, we would really need to be imploding for that to happen.

Also, did you guys notice that our guys were finally hitting the “option man” no matter what!?! I was stoked about that. Never understood why we didn’t in Pruitts tenure. But even if they didn’t have the ball they were getting smacked.

50-50 what though? I hate that term, it seems to imply the other 50% goes to the defender...except those rarely end up INTs.

It was 50% going to be a touchdown and ~50% an incompletion. I mean, the defender has his back to the QB, which is why Milton threw it to begin with. How does one INT the ball with their back?

I hate to break it to you but it's going to be a long year if you think that pass is going to work.

Why not? Guy threw for a whopping 8.9 YPA last year - best of the 3. Also had the 2nd highest of the 3 PFF passer grade (Milton just barely ahead, HB 3rd by quite a bit fwiw) and a 153 qbr. Easily the best runner, which would be nice too. Milton's running is pretty overrated, but fine.

I think either HH or HB could be serviceable passers. And Milton is too, but I can see why the hesitation from some.

I'm not here to be all doom and gloom.

That was the most time in a (clean) pocket that I've seen a UT QB have in a very, very long time.

The defense looked disciplined and great. That was the defense that I expected from Pruitt week over week. As others have pointed out, this would have been a closer game under Pruitt and BGSU likely finds the end zone at least 1 time, probably more.

Milton is also afraid of contact, which is surprising since he weighs 250 pounds

Not a negative on Heupel, but probably more a reflection of COVID concern and fan dissonance.

Again, what's the downside? Defender has his back to him. If it's 50/50, then that's 50% a TD and 40 whatever yd play and 50% incompletion. That sounds great.
