I'll say this after watching the game and sleeping on it two reasons I feel pretty good about where the team is going.

We had a total of 7 drives that stalled, 2 of them we were moving the ball and had fumbles. 1 drive was end of 1st half and we just wanted to get a hail mary attempt in.

So of the other 4 drives that stalled, 1 got derailed by a holding call on Wright that took us from BG's 40 to the 50, then Evans lost 4 yards and we were sitting at 2nd & 24.

Had 2 drives killed from catchable balls that Hyatt dropped. So we stalled ourselves more than BG did anything to stop us.

Penalties and drops are something you fix in practice. Not that worried, I just hope Cooper can get back to 100% and that ankle injury isn't lingering. LOS on both sides looked pretty good. Hopefully Byron Young issue is resolve and he can play moving forward.

My $0.02 worth -
Was hopeful to see a miracle! But lets be realistic - we have a new coach and lost a lot of players - we knew it was an uphill struggle!
There were positive signs! Guys playing hard and some guys never seen before which look like good players. But Football is a team sport! I don’t know if we have any depth. When guys get ankles turned - not sure we have so many guys to fill in the ranks. Lines looked pretty good - hope they can stay healthy will see bigger faster guys going forward.
Lets enjoy the win! Lets be hopeful to pull the 50/50 games like Pitt and a few others and try not to get disappointed when we play the elite teams which we just don’t have the depth and experience yet to handle possibly. Go Vols! Lets shoot for one game at a time. Hello Pitt!

This team lost to Georgia State and BYU, and then with JG and Pruitt still won 7 games.

Don't take too much away from game one.

Uhhh... this is VN. We deal in extremes around here.

I’m serious! I hope it really bothers you that I’m not overreacting! As a fan, I lived through some really bad football in the late 70’s when I had a young inkling of what was going on in the field. I know what BAD looks like. We’re despondent because we didn’t witness 60+ style points first game new QB new system. Previous regimes had trouble running against the UTC’s and UMass’s of the world. Perspective on FX this fall.
I mean I certainly am not thinking the sky is falling, I just think Milton and WR's looked sloppy.

If the deep ball is the key to Heupel's offense then they NEED to work on that every practice with Milton, he had ZERO touch on the long ball, you have to make him understand that the long passes can't be thrown the same way he would throw a slant or hitch route. Got to put some air under it so the WR's can track the ball and make a play, can't be throwing darts that are 10 yds too long or it's going to be a tough season.

I think we are capable of winning 8+ but capability and execution are 2 different things, I think 7 is the magic number and am hoping 6 is worst case scenario

I think so, there was a play later in the game where he took the Tackle he was going against FOR A RIDE straight into the running back and tackled the RB for a 5 yd loss
Games like this are even more important to determine roles. Need real on the field for that. Hadn’t seen Eason mentioned. On offense, didn’t notice any decline when Ollie Lane entered the game…speaking of missing hikers!

Also I'll add I think the team came out a bit on edge and played lights out in the 1st quarter, at all levels. Most people who have played sports have seen that adrenaline dump happen, felt like that's part of the stall in the 2nd.

Stand outs for me though

O: Carvin, Small, Evans
D: Theo, Simmons, Banks

Also despite not being listed on our depth chart, Mohan finished 4th on the team in tackles.

IMO the best unit by far was our special teams, I'd give the RBs a nod as the 2nd best and then personally felt like both the OL/DL played really well.

Last night had to be an audition to recruits. Milton was told to go big in the throw game. Thursday game. Lots of eyes. New system. Just makes no other sense why so little effort was given to short and intermediate throws. My 2¢… overvalued as usual.

Air Raid can be simple if you let it be. I think we need the simplified version for Milton to start out so that he can get his internal clock sped up a little. Triangle reads and throw to open grass. If he can't make quick reads, he isn't going to cut it in this offense.

It also seemed to me that Milton began looking for the deep throw way too much after he missed Tillman the second time in the end zone. He actually threw the short and intermediate ball well but I’m guessing he put a lot of pressure on himself to ball out in order to win over the fans and it caused him to play hero ball when he didn’t need to. That’s very fixable if it’s the case.

You can’t develop chemistry in practice. We’ve witnessed that. 😒 I don’t dispute that he needs to take some mustard off…stated it myself before the game and during, but the receivers need to deliver also. This is big boy football…hit the jugs machine!

Tremblay and Baron!

Not really true that HB is the 3rd best QB we have. The coaches decided in the spring that he needed a development year-- which he didn't get last year. Salter would've had the same. Milton and Hooker are more experienced and have shown they can scramble behind an OL without much depth. If UT felt good about OL depth, Cade would be at G. Calbert's injury and no better option means UT is already at Plan B and got a glimpse of Plan C when Carvin shifted and Lane came in.

Milton was what he has been in practice-- strong arm, inconsistent, not always accurate, but showing flashes of what everyone hopes he can be. It wasn't the best-case scenario or the other QBs would have gotten more PT. But getting Milton comfortable and letting him work through some things in a game that was never in jeopardy should help going forward. All the QBs have plenty to work on to get them where UT needs them to be for SEC play.

Some notes of interest off PFF - Milton.

Off - 65.8
Pass - 60.4
Run - 66.8

Ok, but not great scores. Seems about right. Plenty to work on.

1 turnoverworthy play (the fumble of course), 2.9% TWP - that's solid.

3 drops by receiver...21% drop rate. Obviously need some help by the receivers.

ADOT (average depth of target)...18.1 HOLY CRAP. That means he was laying out deeep ones all night, on average. Consider that when looking at completion% (there's also depth-adjusted completion% and his was 63% - just fine).

The bad:

8 total pressures...combine that with a 3.5 second TTT (time to throw) - and says those "pressures" tended to be on Milton.

3 sacks - again, mostly on Milton imo, there was maybe 1 that wasn't. Milton is ok at escaping but, as expected, is far from a Dobbs runner. But if he can be more decisive moving forward...that should help his escapability.

I thought both units of the DLine played well and you notice the change in philosophy with the amount of penetration compared to engaging your blocker then shedding to make a play.

I might need to watch the game again but I actually thought special teams was our worst unit. Place kicking was good but I wasn’t impressed at all with the kickoff and punt returns. I also didn’t think our coverage while kicking off was very good either.

I will say for me the most disappointing thing was how indecisive Milton was when he did try to run.

Just felt like he didn't want to take off, and it's weird with his size & speed. He seemed to just be a step behind in most things, something I think will improve and I also kind of expected. He has all the physical tools and he just seems to have some rust with the speed of the game right now. I just hope he works through it by the time we play Florida.

They always get me the first game and sometime even a few into the season but they lost me last night. I had some dreams of at least competing with Florida lmaooo.
Y'all are hilarious. It was the first game. It's called getting better?? Give the coaches time to develop these guys. Good grief our fans sometimes...
