Reggie White is on the short list of Mount Rushmore players in UT history. From 1980-1983, White had 293 tackles, 4 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, 1 interception, and 51 tackles for loss (32 sacks.) White was the SEC player of the year and an All-American in 1983.

In 1965, the Vols finished the regular season 7-1-2 and played Tulsa in the Bluebonnet Bowl. Heavy rain and a muddy field didn’t keep UT from easily defeating Tulsa 27-6. Dewey Warren accounted for 3 TDs and Stan Mitchell ran for 49 yards and 1 TD.

Stanley Morgan is the all purpose yards leader yards in UT history with 4,642 yards along with 39 TDs. He’s also the only Vols player with a 200 yard game rushing and receiving. As a RB/WR, Morgan had 1,952 yards rushing and 48 career receptions for 1,075 yards and 8 TDs. His 22.4 average reception is the most in UT history for any player with more than 10 career receptions. A TRUE LEGEND

One of my top 5 games I’ve ever been to was the Citrus Bowl win over Ohio State. Jay Graham’s run, Duff’s stop of Eddie George, and Joey Kent’s 47 yard TD reception are moments I won’t soon forget!

I have probably watched reruns of this game more than any other.

1971 was a strange season for the Vols. One of the most underrated defenses in history lead the Vols to a 10-2 record, by returning 7 interceptions for TDs. The Vols had to replace arguably the best QB in history (up until then) since Bobby Scott had graduated. Three different QBs started, before a senior with 2 career attempts, finally got his chance in the middle of the 6th game. Jim Maxwell got his first start vs Tulsa, and won 6 consecutive games. Included in those 6 wins was a late drive to defeat Vandy, a win over undefeated Penn St, and a Liberty Bowl win vs Arkansas. In 6 1/2 games, Maxwell completed 46 passes for 544 yards and a TD. He also had 2 rushing TDs.

The 1987 season saw the Vols finish the regular season 9-2-1. They accepted an invitation to the Peach Bowl to play Indiana. The Vols jumped out to an early 21-3 lead, behind Reggie Cobb and Jeff Francis. Francis tossed two early TDs, including a 45 yard pass to Anthony Morgan. Indiana would take the lead late in the 4th Quarter, but Francis took over with quick passes and a critical scramble on 4th down. Cobb ran in from 9 yards for the game winning score. Cobb was the MVP, but Francis had a great game as well, going 20-26 for 225 and 2 TDs.

The final regular season game of 1971 brought undefeated Penn St to Knoxville. The offense didn’t get a lot done, but the defense really stepped up with touchdowns via punt return, fumble return, and a 43 yard interception return by 2X All-American Jackie Walker. UT would go on to a decisive 31-11 victory.

Following the 1981 season, the Vols played Wisconsin in the Garden State Bowl. Anthony Hancock went wild with almost 200 yards receiving, but the games MVP went to Steve Alatorre. The QB was 24-42 for 315 yards and 2 TDs, in the 28-21 victory.

In 1967, the Vols finished 9-2 and won the SEC and a share of the National Championship. The offense was balanced with Walter Chadwick and Richard Pickens running and Dewey Warren and Bubba Wyche passing. The QB’s main target was one of the fastest athletes in UT history, Richmond Flowers. The 3x track All-American led the ‘67 Vols with 41 receptions for 585 yards and 4 TDs and was named Football News All-American.

The last time the Vols held their opponents under 100 points for a season was in 1966. Paul Naumoff had just moved from End to linebacker due to the death of Tom Fisher. Naumoff excelled at the new position and was named All-SEC and All-American. Not many know that when Naumoff first arrived in Knoxville, he was a wide receiver and started a few games in 1964. He finished his only season at WR with 2 receptions for 40 yards.
Naumoff went on to a great NFL career with the Detroit Lions.

What exactly happened to Tom Fisher such that he died? Curious.
