General Neyland said the best pure passer he ever saw was Charles Vaughn. Vaughn was also great as a defensive player and helped the Vols to a 24-5-1 record from 1932-1934.
In the 1933 game vs Vanderbilt, Feathers 3 TDs, Vaughn’s spot passing, and Vaughn’s 79 yard interception return helped UT to the largest victory over Vanderbilt in 30 games, 33-6

The Vols are in the College World Series, so a Todd Helton reference is needed. The best baseball player in UT history was an athletic QB that played from 1993-1994, and started a couple of games in ‘94, until Manning took over. During his football time in Knoxville, Helton completed 41 of 75 passes for 484 yards and 4 TDs. Helton didn’t play football his last season to concentrate on baseball, where he would go on to a borderline Hall of Fame career in the Majors.

EDIT: BEST road uniforms in UT history

in 1968, Richmond Flowers played his last game vs his home state school Alabama. In one of the most bizarre finishes in UT history, the Vols dodged an unsuccessful 2 pt conversation, an onside kick, and a missed FG, to escape with a 10-9 victory. Flowers had 74 yards rushing, 37 yards receiving, and scored the Vols only touchdown.

The Vols were 9-0-1 in 1929 because of a defense that gave up 13 points for the season. The week before the Vandy game, UT played Carson-Newman. The Vols reserves got a chance to play, as most of the varsity traveled to Nashville to watch Vandy play Tennessee Tech.
The Vols reserves had no problem with Carson-Newman, winning 73 -0. Paul Heydrick scored 5 TDs and Shack Allen returned an interception 73 yards for a touchdown.
Also......UT would defeat Vandy the next week 13-0.

In 2012, a junior college player named Cordarrelle Patterson arrived in Knoxville, and instantly made his presence known. In his first game as a Vol, Patterson had 93 receiving yards (41 yard TD) and 72 yards rushing (67 yard TD) in the 35-21 victory over NC State.
Patterson would finish his only season as the single season leader in all purpose yards in UT history, with 1,858 yards.

From the 2nd quarter of a game vs LSU on October 29, 1938 until the 2nd quarter of the Rose Bowl the following season, the Vols and Gen. Neyland did not allow a single point to be scored by any opponent. 71 consecutive quarters of shutout football is a record that will never come close to being broken.

In 1981, Co-Captain Lamont Holt Jeffers helped the Vols to an 8-4 record from his linebacker position. Jeffers finished his senior season with 133 total tackles, 70 of them solo. Jeffers also had an interception and a fumble recovery.

For some reason, his shirt reminded me of the Flora-Bama bar.

Gary Kreis played WR at UT from 1967-1969, helping the Vols to two SEC Championships and a National Championship in ‘67. Kreis is best known for his last second TD reception in the ‘68 game vs Georgia, which helped UT to a tie, and his 11 catches vs Kentucky in ‘69. For his career, Kreis had 69 receptions for 1,043 yards and 9 TDs.

Jason Witten came to UT in 2000 and was a defensive end at the beginning of his freshman year. Injuries at tight end forced him to change positions in the middle of the season. The staff made the right decision, as Witten would turn into one of the best to ever play the position as a Vol. Witten would only have 1 reception as a freshman, but finished his 3 seasons with 68 receptions for 797 yards and 7 TDs........in only 20 games.

In 2016, the Vols opened with Appalachian St, 9 years to the day they upset Michigan. It almost happened again. Down 13-6 with 10 minutes left, Josh Dobbs hit Josh Malone on a 67 yard TD to tie the game.
In overtime, Dobbs fumbled the ball into the end zone, but Jalen Hurd recovered it to give UT a 20-13 victory

Not even close, my friend.

I would list 1976 (6-5 after a 7-5 1975), 1977 (4-7 Majors first year after his NC at Pitt only SEC win was vs Vandy), 1988 (5-6 lost first six games coming off a 10-2-1 1987 season and finishing ranked 17th), 2005 (5-7 opened the year ranked #5, lost to Vandy at home for first time in 23 years) and 2008 (5-7 coming off a 10-4 2007 season with a trip to the SEC Championship) way yonder before a 9-4 2016.

Also add 1999. If you look at the talent in the Media Guide for that year, UT would likely have had a winning record in the NFL. Went 9-3.

Maybe something happens as we get older because I was at every single game at Neyland as a 12/13 year old in 76/77 and it never seemed that bad.

Yeh. 88, 05, and ,08 were a total kick in the cods. Gotta give some credit to that 88 squad tho. Some of em were responsible for following that up with back to back sec champ seasons.

Great games vs Alabama will make you a legend......Herman Hickman, Chuck Coleman, Dale Jones, and Johnnie Jones.....but a great career will help you become immortal to Vols fans. During Peyton Manning’s four years in Knoxville, he was 3-1 vs Bama and was 65 - 109 for 919 yards and 7 TDs.

Minor correction, Peyton was 3-1 vrs. the Gumps. His freshman year, he checked to a double teamed receiver and didn't see an unguarded receiver in the end zone all alone on a 4th and goal play late in the 4th quarter. By the way, thanks for doing this..........starts my day off great!

Yep. Coach Cut took the blame for that one. Said he told em to always check down to the blitz side. You’re right tho…the other side was wide open.
