Protests in Cuba Against Ruling Dictatorship

Let's not get all crazy with the Cheese Whiz talking about a second Cuban Missile Crisis. This isn't the 1960s now and China has more problems in their own sphere of influence than to go provoking us like that.

If they want to be the "protector" of Cuba, let them have at it. They'll still open up somewhat and allow trade and tourism.

I agree that strategically Cuba would be a risky position for China. Not easily defended unless you let them make it too dangerous to challenge - which was the game the Soviets played the first time when we forced them to back down. It probably wouldn't come to that, but that's certainly a position we need to consider. The Chinese basically replaced us in the Panama Canal, and they have other footholds in S America; bits and pieces do add up, and China has a lot of patience. They fought us by proxy in Korea and Viet Nam - and didn't mind getting their hands dirty in Korea, and for some reason we still don't view them as an enemy.

It's OK folks, the Biden Admin is on it like a hawk. They've already pin-pointed the root cause of the protests....COVID!

Julie Chung, the acting assistant secretary for the department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, posted, "Peaceful protests are growing in Cuba as the Cuban people exercise their right to peaceful assembly to express concern about rising COVID case/deaths & medicine shortage. We commend the numerous efforts of the Cuban people mobilizing donations to help neighbors."

State Department tweet tying COVID-19 to Cuban protests is criticized

We went to Cuba something like four years ago. The new stuff like cars and tour buses are all Chinese, and the Chinese are "helping" with Cuban infrastructure - rail and electrical. I don't know beyond that point because tourism was controlled - packaged well, but you realized you wound up on the same roads often - like they showed you the best of the worst, and almost everyone you talked to was pretty certainly handpicked and government groomed for the job. My guess is the Chinese are selling Cuba a lot of stuff they can't afford, and will take land when the payment comes due - that's been their strategy in other places around the world.
Yep that’s what China has done around the world. Not really much anybody can do about it if the leaders of a sovereign nation take them up on their offers it’s their own fault.

Oh, but the United States is above doing anything like that, right? Or are we just mad that they are beating us at our own game?

The Chicoms have become experts on colonialism and they’re putting the old colonizers to shame.

She was a member of and assisted an organization that killed people. If you are an accessory you responsible for the act. That slime qualifies her as such. She not a freedom fighter, she's a POS militant.
Freedom fighter going against corrupt police and US govt. Look at how many times they tried to charge her with something that stuck...

So people are protesting against what AOC and Bernie advocate on a daily basis? They are living in a Just and equitable worker’s paradise and have the audacity to COMPLAIN about it?????
Obviously the bigoted, white suprematist, racist cancer has now spread to Cuba. They have apparently fooled the Cubans into working against their own self interest by desiring to be cast back into the oppressive arms of the capitalist imperialist masters. How could this have happened commrades????? The triumph of socialism and communism is a scientific and historical certainty. Marx said so.

Well, if we learned anything from the Arab Spring, it's that a flourishing democracy in Cuba is nigh [blue font].
If they can cast off their authoritarian leadership good for them. That doesn’t mean we need to get involved. And even if the US government doesn’t get directly involved I’d guess there are a BUNCH of rich Cuban Americans willing to bankroll some freedom efforts.
