Recruiting Forum Football Talk III

It’d be beyond idiotic to abandon our NCs as a recruiting tool. Those are the very foundation of our tradition. Without them we are no better than a South Carolina or Vandy. It’s a tangible connection to a time where we were elite and evidence that it can be done here again if only the right people are given the keys.

The fact that Science Hill has been so terrible at football until recently has really hurt D-B over the years, IMO. Now, Crockett and other teams in the area are getting better. That might actually help them.
Back in '90-91 my high school BB team (White's Creek) was ranked #1 in the country in basketball, and got spanked by Science Hill in the state tourney. We were stunned.

I was counting Garner and BJM as the more known commodities. In all reality, Garner is the only coach that no one needed to look up or talk themselves into by parsing his past success relative to previous team, conference etc. again, we can all speculate on how good or surprising they will be. my point was, SEC recruiting is different and all of these guys have to prove it, and I think that’s why they are the most active social media coaches in the conference. When no one knows who you are, I think they are trying to find ways to be known. I gave DW or hype credit for that, I think it’s smart to try and generate excitement for a staff that everyone, including prospects are guessing on.
How many assistant coaches has any of us ever truly heard of unless they are retreads in this conference....We don’t need a splash name..... we need solid coaches that work good together and can build this program.... This staff has to prove that they can get the job done but we should all support them and make Tennessee look a place athletes can call home.

What if it doesn’t matter who has the keys? What if the problem is structural? What if that rot is way deeper than any President, Chancellor, AD, or coach? We’ve had multiple regimes since 2008. The one constant has been failure. I’m not sure this is a program that can succeed any more with the environment structured as it is. It’s like McGill said: it’s pro wrestling, and we’re the jobbers.

We're only jobbers if we allow it. If DW is the AD everyone touts him as being, that won't remain the same. A strong AD quickly finds where the bodies are buried and isn't afraid of using them to get a leg up in the conference. Our last successful AD was Doug Dickey, and he made sure UT ate at the big boy table. DW cannot be intimidated and has to demand the same. His job isn't to play nice with the other SEC schools. His job is to restore UT to where it should be.

Doubt it. They are battle tested. I do like that I really feel like our team has found themselves over last 3 games. Found a formula that works. Just need to keep turnovers to a low. Also needs refs to not take us out of our new found success with a bunch of charge calls that make our guys stop going to the paint. Also would help if they would call a travel on Herb Jones who walks 3-4 times a game

No. 5 Tennessee Volunteers vs. No. 12 Oregon State Ducks
Oregon State went on an improbable run in the Pac-12 tournament. It has a terrific guard in Ethan Thompson. But Tennessee is talented and tough at every position. Tennessee has size, depth and talent. If the Vols make shots, this team can beat anyone. Yet there have been struggles to score from time to time, and that is what can end Tennessee's ride in Indy. Tennessee's offense is average. But when in a flow, this group is special. Yves Pons is one of the best defenders in the country. Lefty John Fulkerson is a low-post threat. Freshman phenoms Jaden Springer and Keon Johnson are dynamic athletes and drivers who can make Tennessee truly elite. Tennessee can guard inside and out, force turnovers, force tough 2s, block shots and give you a physical beating. They wear orange, but the Vols leave you black and blue. Tennessee can get stuck on the offensive end at times but is better than the Beavers.
Winner: Tennessee

Tennessee vs. Oklahoma State
The Vols are so good defensively and more experienced. Unless the Vols go into one of their scoring droughts, I like Tennessee here -- by a hair.
Winner: Tennessee

He has us losing to Illinois in sweet 16.

He also has the Gumps in the Final Four playing Gonzaga.

I just hope Springer, Keon, Pons play inspired if those 3 want to get drafted in the NBA this will be the time to show out. Cause if you don't and we get bounced after a game or two you very well could hurt your draft stock.

I hope Fulkerson gets to play, but ultimately I'd rather him be cautious and put his health first.
