Kevin Steele and Vols Officially Part Ways

Auburn was already paying him the 900K. He didn't get any additional money taking the UT job. UT just took over part of Auburn's burden. So he has not reason to be sending Fulmer anything and likely won't. He made the same money coming to Tennessee he would have made had he just sat at home in Auburn. Nothing more, nothing less.
Indeed. Merely fleecing UT for a bit instead of JUST Auburn at the hand of Phil Fulmer.

Spin it however you want, Phil Fulmer cost UT about another cool million.

Assuming he's not ready to retire and he doesn't sign an intern or seriously backloaded contract (jonesin it), Tennessee should avoid most of those monthly payments when he hires on somewhere else.
He's nuts to sign on anywhere. He's got 2.1M coming from Auburn and 900k coming from UT for the next 2 years and he's 62yo.

C'mon. At this point, screw it. He could easily sign on as an "analyst" for 35k/yr for 3 years and health benefits until he's 65.

UT got played by Fulmer, yet again. Like Fulmer collecting money for nothing from UT, Steele is collecting money for nothing from UT.

I think Tennessee gets relief if Steal takes another job. The last in first out theory. There might be some standard coaches contract language that compounds responsibility though and both schools pay. It would be interesting to know for sure.

That only makes sense. Relief to the UT contract until it is fully covered. Then any additional relief would go to the Auburn contract.

He got no financial benefit over the next two years for coming to UT. If he wants to work, and it seems he does, anything he makes should logically offset the UT contract first. At this price, someone will hire him. I look forward to all the doomsayers posting that it worked out fairly and reasonably when that happens.

Good money for the days he was employed......I would have taken any job like that!!! But as an acting head coach for the Vols.....He can brag about not losing a single game!!! HAHA! But on the flip side........He never won either. Still a good contract for him!

Can't wait for UT to start claiming budget problems and crying for donations. Pfftt....

Kevin Steele is not the beneficiary here. It’s Auburn. The money is essentially going to them. Not that it makes this any less stupid.

Steele will be sending Fulmer a nice Christmas gift this year, I assume.

$900,000/50 days = $18,000 per day + recruiting travel expenses, etc.

Nicely done, Phil. With Phil Fulmer, VFL means "virtually f&#king lubeless"
Steele is still getting the same amount of money hw would have gotten if UT had not hired him. Auburn is just not paying the amount we are paying. Only difference is Steele has to endorse two checks a month instead of one. We arena making him work twice as hard to get his money.

There was a strategy for Napoleon at Waterloo...... just not a very good one.

Sometimes if it looks inept and wasteful, it really is inept and wasteful.

they had to have an option outside of staff members if Pruitt was fired to run the program.. since investigation is still in progress back then it was unknown who all on staff was involved. Actually, a person of Steeles experience could have asked for 1.5 million to be hired at the time that he was and it would have been a valid request. They actually got him cheap.

Uh huh, and hiring him for 2 years? Does that sound like an "interim hire" strategy? They got him cheap because no one wants him...... except Fulmer, who wanted to keep his grubby paws on the program behind the scenes.

Keep trying to put lipstick on this pig. It's still a pig.

Yikes! What era are you living in? Has Direct Deposit not made it to the fishing cabins in Monroe County?

Sure, Steele isn't making any more money. UT is just losing revenue. Does that make it better in your eyes?

For $30K per year so he too can stick it up the Vols.[/QUOTE

Every dollar UA WOULD pay him saves AU a dollar. Not one of their objectives. But it might make us look bad running him off if Saban thinks he is worthy to help them and we did not. You can twist any fact to meet an agenda if you really desire. Of course he might go there for nearly free to stick it to AU folks. Them paying for an UA asset would be rich and get the AU lower element really fired up like our own rocket scientists in this thread. Venting with zero value add. Steele agreed to come back to his Alma Mater and not earn a single dime more than he would if he went to the beach. CPF did not benefit from him doing so either.

I have no problem with DW not keeping him on. Steele was part of plan A not plan B. But I would bet more than a nickel that CPF wishes he had gambled on Steele instead of Pruitt after his first week on the job. Doubt either one, or anyone else available at the end of the program damaging Currie search, could have taken us where we wanted to go, but not many would have taken us down to where we are now. This will weigh on CPF forever. Doubt DW will ever fire a guy and expect the "This is Tennessee" plan to improve our lot, instead of having some guys that have winked after a couple of hypothetical questions on standby.

Not trying to justify as smart or the right thing. Just saying what logic was used by Plowman and advice from lawyers. As far as 2 years, Steele had the leverage not Tennessee.
