Kevin Steele and Vols Officially Part Ways

I bet she had no idea she was going to have to cut HIM loose. The investigation was no SHOW. It was a professional response that she handed over to professionals.

I agree that she had not determined Pruitt was toast at that time. That appears to come as a late flurry of findings by those investigating. I have come to the conclusion that at that time they thought they had found enough bad acts to be a survivable problem for Pruitt, but enough to go with our bad performance to project we would fire him next year with some lower buyouts and she wanted a strong interim on staff for a potential mid season removal. So she dispatched CPF to get someone he trusted to do that under his assumed watch. The other shoes dropped and loaded with for cause they went plan B which cut Pruitt loose and that led to the new AD to hire new coach deal. I cannot find a more logical explanation for the entire Steele saga. I have always assumed that Steele could have gotten lots of offers to work for 450K and only took ours because he was an alum, and the interim potential was maybe his last shot to audition for a HC gig anywhere. Not a fit with the new team, so be it.

As I grit my teeth as every six figures gets added to the tab, I console myself knowing that Pruitt’s gone. I was wrong now I’m ready to move on.

OK, I am going to be the odd man out here and say I think that hiring Steele was the right thing for the admin to do.
...
Steele was a relatively low cost insurance policy. If he had not been in place, and things turned out differently (White not quickly hired, and then Heupel), people on this forum would be blasting the administration for not being prepared and not having a back up plan.

Steele's hire only looks stupid with the benefit of total hindsight. It's easy to judge when you look backwards. Unfortunately those having to make decisions in real time don't have that abillity.
Absolutely correct. You make decisions based on the information you have at the time. Without Steele... or someone else... in the fold to provide some stability the program could have collapsed forever. It was possible, maybe likely, that every coach on staff would be fired, every player hit the transfer portal, and every signed opt out. Tennessee Football would never recover. Steele was cheap insurance and the few weeks he steadied the ship was worth 900k. This may have been a program-saving hire.

And yes, worst case, we had an option for head coach ready to go if needed.

Yeah, considering that he was on Auburn's dime, we didnt have to pay him more than several of the assistants already on staff. It was stupid since the law firm was putting the final bows on Pruitt's termination the same time we were hiring Steele. We hired a guy to work for a coach and administration that we were actively trying to can.

I was right in January and I'm right now.

The single worst thing is all of that money spent and absolutely nothing to show for it!

Under the circumstances? And how things were playing out at the time? With the number of players entering the transfer portal, I see it as an attempt at the time to bring stability to an unstable situation. Granted, a mostly failed attempt, but there might be two or three players staying who might have jumped ship without Steele being here. And if there actually are such players in that category, we may never know. I guess they were betting whoever the next coach would be would retain him. One thing I know for sure: Tennessee had some of the stupidest smart people in college sports. They need to test the air and water over there.
