That's for a candidate to decide. You can't hire someone against their will so that's a silly concern. What you can do is go after the best candidates and make them an offer that is hard to pass on. If they accept, great. If not, move on. No need to let your ego stand in the way and restrict the hiring pool to VFLs.

We as a fanbase are too hung up on hiring people who love the university as much as we do. Saban didn't care about Alabama when he was hired. He does now. The same can be said for lots of coaching hires. Hire the best coach and then make them fall in love with the university by treating them right.

Always pick the best of who is available and meet reasonable contractual/compensation demands. If any prospects on the list are not sold out on your opportunity, move on, it's not worth discussing potential compensation. You pick the best of who is 100% sold out on the opportunity. That's how we ended up with CJH as HC. The person may not be the first through the whatever choice. It will be the one that is determined to be the best available who is sold out on the opportunity. With CJH, DW then met the contractual stipulations and compensation demands within the limitations he was given by UT.

Which is why it takes time to do this correctly. It is also how it can become mutually beneficial.

No one makes a major life decision due to a “sole” reason. The guy is contemplating a major decision with his family. If he takes the job, he’ll be committed to it. He’s been a top coach everywhere he’s been.

I think the "if he is coming for the money I don't want him" perspective if a little flawed. Certainly understand the sentiment. But ONCE HE IS HERE he is not going to halve only one toe in the water. He is 36 and has a long career in front of him. Plus to be where he is at at the age of 36 he is a highly driven and competitive person. If he makes the decision to come here because he likes the $$$ then that is fine. It is how the marketplace works. I don't have concerns that he would get here and half@ss his job because he just wants a paycheck. He is too young and driven for that.

What do you really expect an OSU writer to state on a radio station in COLUMBUS OHIO.... OF course he is going to state OSU/Columbus is wonderful and AW loves it there, after all his parents live there and he grew up there. Suspect very few of you have had to relocate for better job opportunities. Have little doubt if he comes, he will be fully committed to doing his best job possible as it is a career alternating decision.
