One would assume that an important variable would be the quality of opposition defenses. We play 3-5 top ten defenses a year. Add a three step drop with long developing plays and an qb who holds the ball too long, and it starts to feel like this comparison comes apart. Not asking you to do the additional work to add those inputs, but it would be interesting to see how that changes the outputs.

Very true. There's always nuances and numbers don't always translate. I wouldn't say this falls apart all, because exactly what you mentioned is part of the reason we should expect to see our numbers come down. We'll be running quicker developing plays with hopefully a QB that doesn't hold the ball as long. That's why I put for reference, not comparison. I know people would be curious what ours have been on this same metric.

Perhaps a better actual comparison would be the sack rates for Heupel's time at Mizzou since those are games against similar opponents.

Missouri 2016 - 3.31% (10th)
Missouri 2017 - 2.94% (9th)

The biggest takeaway from all of this should be that Heupel's offense creates offenses that are OL friendly and gets the ball out quickly. Regardless of OL coach or competition.
