Isn’t he the *future interim head coach? He was a head coach 19 years ago. Clearly wasn't ready. He hadn't even been a DC yet. Silly to judge him off of that in 2021. Gene Stallings was also a terrible head coach at Texas A&M when he was young before he became a Hall of Fame coach at Bama.
Steele was one of the better DCs in the SEC. There's a reason some people at Auburn wanted him for Head Coach. But doesn't matter since he isn't DC anyway; he's likely coaching LBs.
Great hire IMO. Of the many things I'm worried about in UT football right now, this isn't one of them.

It has that feel that he is being brought in to be an interim coach if needed, though. If Pruitt gets fired in February, who are you bringing in? The interim coach would likely be Steele and he might very well get most if not all of 2021 to audition for the permanent job while Fulmer (or someone) conducts an "exhaustive" search.Very happy with the hire as long as it doesn’t mean he is head coach in waiting.
Guy is a good (but not great) DC. He has experience. Has connections to guys in the portal. Has recruiting connections. From a financial perspective, very low risk.
Taken in a vacuum, this is a very solid hire. Taken with the backdrop of our ClusterF program, not so sure but with the financial risk this low, seems to be OK
Great post. As an LB coach, Steele is a good hire. If Pruitt is fired in a year as most expect to happen, what does it matter anyway? This is just something else for the legion of the miserable to whine over... but it's nothing, really. He was a head coach 19 years ago. Clearly wasn't ready. He hadn't even been a DC yet. We hired a COORDINATOR from a school that’s currently better than we are to be a POSITION COACH and our MENSA candidate fan base is angry.
No one in this athletic department should be worried about hiring right now. They should all be worried about finding a new job. That's why people are angry.
