Chris Low Says It Will Be “Difficult” For Pruitt To Stay As HC

I had no idea Pruitt didn’t get fired from Alabama...
Plenty of fired coaches finish out the season with their teams. Zook at Florida and Phillips at Kentucky come to mind. Even some guy named Fulmer at Tennessee finished out the season after getting fired. Coordinators on the other hand (Cutcliffe at Tennessee for instance) usually leave to focus on their HC positions once hired. As you seem to be aware, Pruitt did not...
On a side note, you need to look up what the term “get your head out of the sand” means to use in the correct content in the future
Thinking that Pruitt was fired at Alabama means you have your head in the sand or you just became a UT fan after Pruitt was hired here. Which is it?6B488CF2-0082-4ACA-A0A9-A6771B581456.gif

Herman is probably where I'd go first if we are sticking with non-NCAA issue guys. Urban Meyer tree. Offense guy. Faced Texas pressure. Actually had a decent record and was building there.

He was an accomplished offensive coach before working under Urban too. We need to stay away from the Saban tree at all costs. Nick Saban style works for Nick Saban's personality. Both Saban disciples we've had have been massive failures. Let's try a different route.

...
Dooley was 17-20 when we hired him.
Butch was 50-27 and had 1st place ties for conference titles (Not a bew up and comer)
Chadwell is 79-52 with one conference championship and another one vacated.
AP Coach of the Year 2020 (NOT an new up and comer)
been Head Coaching since 2009....

He's still an up-and-comer.

He's had 1 great season (out of 3) at the G5 level and he took over for the best coach in Coastal Carolina's history (Moglia). He did well at Charleston Southern, but it's not like he was winning national titles there. Compare him to someone like Jim Tressel or Chris Klieman, who both won multiple national titles before taking over P5 programs, and his track record is nowhere close to either of them. Chadwell has also never held a job, even as an assistant, at the P5 level.

Certainly a far better hire than Derek Dooley, but less accomplished than Butch Jones when we hired him. He could end up being wildly successful or a total flop; both scenarios seem equally likely.

I'd be very happy for him as a fellow ETSU alum, but he's a big gamble.

Now that Clow has all but confirmed Pruitt is out. Let's put aside the crazy ideas we know are not happening.

Freeze, Campbell, Fickell, Meyer, Stoops are not coming here. We don't want Fickell anyways. The rest would be a massive upgrade but let's focus on the short list of realistic football coaches.

Herman - clearly the best option

No need to waste time on anyone else. Just stop here.
I agree. Freeze is a pipe dream. If we are gonna speak on it let’s speak about realistic options...Herman would be a good hire. Other names that will be mentioned whether people like it or not is:
1. Marrone (could be a good option)
2. Chadwell (doubt it)
3. Randy Sanders

Malzahn isn’t gonna want any part of this job if we have sanctions

Who's the other? (unless you're talking about Sunseri, then carry on. I was thinking strictly HC).

Finally, some good news.

Disclaimer: I am not claiming to be an insider. This is not a prediction nor will I comment on it further.

As you all know, I have said that I would be pleasantly surprised if Pruitt was fired because I simply didn’t expect it. That is, until today. While talking to someone today with serious connections to the university (legal compliance) with which I am acquainted, I said I couldn’t see JP being fired. His only comment in response was, “Keep an eye on the news later this week.”. This is FWIW.

I agree about Herman, but not the idea that we "don't want Fickell". He's by far the most accomplished G5 coach. Fickell would be an A-list hire IMO. He'd be the coach of Ohio State right now if he hadn't taken the Cincy job 1 year before Meyer left. Plus, he came within a hair of beating Georgia, with a fraction of the talent.

Fickell wants the Ohio State job, but it's not coming open any time soon. So he can either stay at Cincy forever, or take another Tier 1 job. I think he eventually takes another job.

We should also note something very interesting; most of the Saban-tree head coaches have been flops. The Urban Meyer tree, however, has been much more successful: Dan Mullen, Ryan Day, Luke Fickell. Even some of the coaches that got fired did alright (e.g. Doc Holliday at Marshall).

We can definitely do worse than Fickell. My viewpoint is the way the modern game is played we should have an offensive HC. Why? The rules now and will forever always favor offense. The offense has always had an advantage because they know the play. Defense countered with aggression and intimidation; does that WR want to catch the high ball over the middle and get his head taken off? That can't be done anymore. Defense is obviously important but the pendulum has swung and even Saban has publicly acknowledged it too.

An offensive minded HC can establish an offensive identity that stays with the program regardless of the OC. I think that is more important than great defense. Think Clemson.

Now, saying that, I think the MOST important thing of any coach is that they understand the difference and know how to be a great CEO. A great OC or DC does not necessarily make a great HC. Completely different job descriptions. If I have the choice, I pick a good CEO with the offensive background for those reasons.

100% agree on the Saban tree. We need to stay away from Saban's tree at all costs.
