They're always doing temp checks. It's backchanneled through search firms, who talk to agents and find out who's happy, who's looking, who's open, who's not and what it would take to get someone to move. Intermediaries do things UT cannot and agents say things coaches won't. It's always a shortlist at the top, then tiered. The past four hires have been made for different reasons. Kiffin was shortlisted, but UT had to go pretty far down the list for Dooley and Pruitt.
I always kind of laugh when I read Bruce Feldman refer to Pruitt as "Fulmer's hand picked choice" because he really didn't have much to pick from after the debacle that was John Currie.

Would any of Napier/Freeze/Chadwell/Gus be as far down the list as Pruitt and Dooley?

Are some of the influencers at UT trying to keep Pruitt for one more year, thereby saving $$$, and are banking on Freeze, or Napier, or Chadwell, etc. still being available after next year if Pruitt doesn't turn it around?

We really need to do a coaching search when the specter of Gruden isn’t around to taint the whole thing. Let alone, replacing a coach who left in the dead of night in January.

This JG attachment has been inexplicably narrow-minded. I've watched HB since he was a middle-schooler. He trained and camped with a kid I know, so I've seen him grow as a QB. And I watched JT practice last year. Both have a higher ceiling than JG-- but both have been backseated. There's no reason for UT to be in the position we're in with the roster we have.
Absolutely. Until we find a QB that can work a passing tree, we will be the same ole struggling offense. Bailey, not a fault of his own, simply aired it out to 1 of 2 All World WRs in HS. He has the high likelihood to develop. Shrout actually looked like he could work the reads here lately. JG never saw the tree.

Chadwell is worst than a Pruitt/Dooley level hire. Napier is marginally better, probably would last 4 years.
Chadwell is better than keeping what we have, you see you might be right or you might be wrong but we know for sure what we have now isn’t going to work and that’s the difference.

Do you think Pruitt is as miserable as he appears to be?

Most of us would be... so probably yes. Everybody hates losing, so nobody's having much fun right now. The topic of coaching searches is a fun diversion for some fans. It's not fun for anybody inside UT-- at least not for anyone I've ever met.

THIS...To say Fulmer "HAND PICKED" Pruitt, I think is a stretch. Obviously he did pick him to be the head coach but not sure what his options were at that stage in the game after the way things were handled by the previous AD. I am not sure how much Fulmer should be held accountable for that. He may have had to choose the lesser of two evils by the time it got to him.

You can keep looking through poo for a diamond, or you can go to the diamond store.

The is all on Pruitt. He made a choice to play the same QB over and over and over. He didn’t even try to fix things. That’s on him.

Every time I start to come back around on Pruitt I am reminded of some moronic thing he did - like fire a coach mid game. Who freaking does that - more than once too.

Ugh.

I have the sads
I start to try to convince myself he can figure it out with Bailey now the QB. But then I remember we got blown out in 6 straight games, including 2 to KY and Arkansas, and that we were basically non competitive against GSU last year and lost to BYU, and that to this day he hasn't competed with any of our rivals. Hasn't even been close.
