If I were required to make an argument for the other side, the only thing I can come up with is two fold:
1) We appeared to be on the right track until COVID hit and took the wind out of our sails. (On a side note, I believe Fulmer, Pruitt and some of my more conservative friends believe the Knoxville mayor, a democrat, made the social distancing and quarantining rules too strict thus giving us a disadvantage against our competition.)
2) We’ve proven over time here that more change does not mean better results. Maybe it’s time to push through adversity and see how we come out on the other side.
#1 is really about the only thing you can plausibly claim. You can claim Pruitt was dealt a harsher blow than other schools due to contact tracing, and he deserves a mulligan. Of course, you can refute that argument on the basis of starting the season 2-0, when we had the most guys out, and we've gotten much worse as those guys came back and got consistent practice time.

#2 I don't really think flies. Sure, we've changed coaches a bunch, but what was the argument for keeping Dooley after a 4-19 conference record over 3 years? For keeping Butch after a 14-24 conference record after 5 years? It isn't like we're canning these coaches after a single bad season.

I know people would freak about it, but Ohio St's DC was a high school coach not long ago.
Ohio State gets a longer leash from their fanbase. Personally not against hiring no names...as long as they work out. Not a fan of the noise we hear until that’s a reality.

Of course, coaches are wanting their names floated out there. That's been true for the last two coaching searches.

Not sure why people keep thinking I'm some sort of advocate for Pruitt. I've said many times that I never thought Pruitt was a good hire or a good fit for UT. He wasn't ready for the job and he hasn't learned quickly. I'm not even sure how teachable he is. The only thing I like about the guy is his family. His wife and kids are wonderful, and all this hate and negativity is hard on them. Families have it rough during times like this.

Pruitt is who he's always been. The mistake was made when the hire was made. No matter what decision is made now, UT is going to pay and pay and pay for it going forward.
Thing is, you can start digging out of the hole today or tomorrow.

We should plan on today.

If we’re going to have to pay, we might as well pay for someone good and give ourselves the best chance to recoup our expenses in the long run.

Continuing to throw money at Pruitt and co. is just bad business.

I actually kind of adhere to that second point (though I know it's not necessarily your POV), but when it comes to a football coach most people in these parts couldn't spell patience if you spotted them the "a-t-i-e-n-c-e".

Why are we not giving Harrison Bailey the opportunity to be the future? He should be the only one receiving in game snaps. 2 QB systems are terrible. By pulling him Saturday they kept him form having a really good game. 200+ 2 TDs.
That wasn't a 2 qb system. Nor did HB get "pulled". It was 31-7 with about 8 minutes left. Game was way over. They wanted to let someone else get garbage time reps. Gotta keep another QB happy before the season ends imo.

Sorry for the way I phrased it, my point is that colleges hire high school coaches all the time if they deliver on a high profile recruit. Coach Fulmer is 100% Tennessee and he hit on a lot of recruits but also missed on his share. If he fires Pruitt there’s no reason to at least not interview Freeze & see if there’s a possible go & if not then so be it
The NCAA put a stop to hiring coaches just to get a recruit. I believe they said a coach had to be two years removed from a player before he could join that player on a college team as an on field assistant.

People around here are really impatient, but Dooley and Butch weren't fired because of a lack of patience. It isn't like Dooley was fired after a single bad season; he was fired after 3 bad seasons. Butch was fired after having 1 good season out of 5 (2015), and his 5th and final season was the worst in school history. The impatience thing would be more valid if we fired Dooley after 2010 or 2011 or if we fired Butch after 2014 or 2016.

I can’t think of one. Now @LA Vol’s statement eliminates the financial reasoning... he’s done. I’m going to believe that Fulmer is working behind the scenes right now to hire someone else. He does love TN. Surely he can’t allow beating Sarah Fuller and the replacements be the measuring stick of wether or not to keep Pruitt. Can he?🤔

No, it doesn't mean he's done. It means UT, which is already debt servicing a financial shortfall for this year with another projected for next year, will have to source upward of $20MM for a coaching search it doesn't want. And find someone who's the right fit for UT-- NOT as easy as fans think-- and is willing to come to UT on terms UT is willing to offer. And it means Randy Boyd is willing to do this and Phillip Fulmer wants to do this, when both wanted to stabilize the program with a five-year hire.

None of which means it can't be done or won't be done. But it also doesn't mean it will be done or that fans or the media will know it's being done. The season is going to play out and UT will continue to work from within.
