I’m not praising him. I’m very disappointed in his coaching the last 4.5 games. But I am a realist. I know how things work. I know he will be our coach next year. Therefore I choose to support those men who are giving their all for Tennessee this year and next. Because to me that is the Volunteer way.
You don’t cut and run.

I assume you are talking about the players right? Because I'd love for someone to show me where JP has been giving his all this year....

Wes Rucker said on the 247 Podcast that Florida is 127 out of 127 D1 teams in punts per game. They are punting less than twice a game this season.

It's going to be ugly. Prepare thyself.

I will probably watch the first quarter then find something else to do if/when it gets out of hand. Don't care anymore.

He might be, like I said. However if he was from outside Tennessee or the southeast, nobody here would know who he is. He's from East Tennessee and is having a good year at a G5 school. He has a less impressive resume than Butch did before he took this job and is the epitome of a "prove it" coach, which many here profess to not want this time.
I didn’t know where he was from. I didn’t even really know who he was until this year. So I looked up his record and who he has beat. He has improved every program he has been at. He beat Napier this year, game day is at his school, and has coastal ranked. Butch inherited a team with good players and Chip Kelly’s coaching. He never built anything.

He was pretty clear saying if he was Pruitt he would go out and sign the best '22 class he can. Impossible to do this when you are still not winning going into year 4.
Not trying to be an a$$ but how is signing the best class he can in ‘22 not the same thing any other coach is trying to do?

Look, I’m not the board czar, I’m just pointing out an observation that’s all.

If I were in JP’s shoes...I would probably look to the future. Shore up one of the best ‘22 classes the program has ever seen and make it extremely hard for the administration to get rid of me for fear of loosing such a talented group of players...

I like the mindset, I really do, but how does he go about doing that with nothing to sell? How are you going to get the best '22 class with your program 'ishing the bed on the reg, and looking like you don't know how to run a football program? Tell me why a recruit, other than growing up being a die-hard Vol fan, would want to come here now? I am being serious.

You're right that is every coaches objective. I just do not see that being a possibility for Pruitt. Look at how we are about to end up this signing period and tell me a lame duck coach, showing no progress on the field, with nothing left to sell is going to sign one of the best classes in school history.

He still would be the epitome of a "prove it" coach if he came here. He's had some success at the Division II and FCS level, and he's in the midst of having one really good season at a G5 school. Coastal is a good team but they've played only one decent opponent all year (Napier). It's hilarious how people will favor one coach over another for the Tennessee job on the basis of a single game; there are people on here who like Chadwell over Napier because he beat Napier earlier this year.

I think people need to pump the brakes on these really good seasons Napier, Chadwell, and even Freeze are having at these G5 schools this year. Freeze is enticing for the Tennessee job because of what he did at Ole Miss; I don't read too much into what he's done at Liberty outside of it rehabilitating his image.

I thought about this the other week. If he is brought back I think we need to win the East to retain him. The team will be all of his recruits. No more excuses.
They will give him another year even if he goes 6-6. 3 of 4 nonconference will be wins. Add Vandy and SC and KY/Mizzou and he's there. Assuming he makes it to November.

If Herman isn't having success at Texas, what makes you think he'd be successful here? I think Tennessee and Texas are actually kind of similar jobs, especially in the sense of dealing with boosters and needing to be a quasi-politician. Also, Tennessee is a more difficult recruiting job than Texas is.
Texas has unreasonable expectations. He has a 70% winning percentage. He is 4-1 in bowl games and beat Georgia under Smart. The man can coach. We need to get back to winning 8-9 games a year and he brings that. If you keep nitpicking every coach, you end up with coach google because we are trying to find the next Saban/Meyer.

Smart is highly overrated. He should be much more successful then he is.

Disagree. I was at the KY game. It was JG's gifted 17+ points that turned that game. Actually on at least one of those we were driving and would have scored so realistically 24 point swing plus the effort from the rest of the team changed decidedly after the second TO.

At AU, with the way we were running the ball, with a decent QB we score 30+ and the def problems don't matter in the outcome.
And who's fault is it that JG got chance after chance to gift them those points? Also does his turnovers matter when the defense is getting the ball shoved down their throats all game? How about when we couldn't run or pass against them? UK dominated the LOS against us.

The more I think about it the more I realize how much Pruitt really s**t the bed this year. We had a ton of recruiting momentum coming into the season for the 21’ and 22’ class had a 8 game winning streak after the first two games then the second half of UGA happened and it’s been downhill since. Pruitt’s unwillingness to adapt and his stubbornness to stick with #2 at QB and not playing our most talented players (which he admitted) will ultimately be his downfall at UT it may not happen this year but it will happen. Only hope is for HB and the young guys play and be competitive the next three games but I’ll believe it when I see it.

If Pruitt is our coach in 2021 then there are guaranteed losses next year. If Hugh Freeze is coach then Vols have a chance to be in every ballgame next year.
good god man. that just isnt true. Freeze beat Bama, he is an slightly above averahe coach @ 4-2 in bowl games, 70% WP at Liberty and 61% at Ole Miss, and he cheated to get there!

They expect to win the Big 12, which is not unreasonable given their resources. He's really only had 1 good season there in 4 years, and that good season didn't result in a conference title.

Don't get me wrong - Herman would be better than Pruitt by orders of magnitude, and we'd probably win most of the games we're supposed to. But after a few years of not being able to beat the Big 3 plus occasionally dropping another game, we'd run him off too.

Guys this may sound ridiculous, but hear me out. We are 5-2 with an SEC caliber QB this year. Not Peyton, just an SEC caliber QB. While I have not been thrilled with Friend for 3 years, AU was definitely the OL's best game in those same 3 years. I believe the offense comes down to 3 moves:
- JG & Kennedy out, replaced with Bailey & Carvin/Cooper
- Adjust the mindset to assume needing to score 35ppg
- Weinke & Friend get other jobs and are replaced with strong coaches & recruiters who fit with the rest of the staff (personally I would put T at QB, let Chaney and Fulmer handle OL (I know NCAA rules, there are work arounds) and go get a Kippy Browm caliber WR coach).

Defense is more confusing, so I will give Pruitt 4 moves:
- Drop the charade and help DA move on and Pruitt becomes the acting DC
- Help Shelton find another job & reassign Neids to ST and tell him his job is to become the next Frank Beamer, recruit his @$$ off and troll other teams on SM
- Use those 4 open positions to bring in LT, Tosh, Bo Davis and a veteran DB coach.
- Spend the off-season with three NFL clubs learning to rescheme the defense to eliminate our soft spot in the middle of the field without giving up the front or back end.

This is all predicated on the idea we will not replace Pruitt this year. IF, we somehow won 2 of 3 AND salvaged most of the recruiting class, THEN we out and did these things to prep for next year; at least we would have cut $5-6M off the buyout and improved our chances of a decent season next year. We won't know what Pruitt is until JG and some bad senior leadership is gone. We, and he, might be surprised at just how much of a difference that makes.
Excuses. It’s his job to develop a QB. If we didn’t have one, take a transfer or two. He didn’t. We are 2-5 because of his decisions. We have to stop playing the what if game and stop giving Pruitt excuses.

Unless he has a miracle turn around you can kiss that ‘22 class goodbye. And that’s a class that we can’t afford to miss

My one good reason is actually two things:

JG won’t be the starter.
Pruitt is a great Xs and Os coach - don’t laugh, he is. He will figure this out.

Bonus: Salter is going to be legit elite.
I’m with ya
Are fans are part of the recruiting problem for this class also
Running around with pitchforks and burning sticks is not helping right now at all

22 class has a ton of good players. We have got to get re established in middle TN.
Hard for head coach with next to zero success in the SEC to do. Not much to sell. We'll get a share but I expect it to be very similar to the past few years. Most of the best go elsewhere, we get a few pieces.
