Gibbs sitting out the season

The 2020 season is / will be a "one off". Not since WW2 has college football seen anything like this. Not even the aftermath of Katrina, for those of us in the South. With the B10 and PAC12 cancelling the entire season, not to mention other non-P5 conferences, it's not like a 5-5 record this year (just as an example, but have you seen who we play?) will scare off any 2021 talent.

UT started the 2019 season by losing to Georgia State and BYU. At home. Still managed to haul in a very solid class. Yes, at some point this staff will need to win big games, but my guess would be that the 2020 season won't be a litmus test for any program or coaching staff out there. So you make lemonade out of the lemons, and set your sights on 2021. UT can still have a good year, but think about next year when HB, Cade (hopefully), and Gibbs (hopefully) step into a roster that, at that point, should be brimming with talent.

Sometimes life sucks. So it goes with the 2020 college football season. Unless these young men totally screw the pooch by mimicking the NFL (in which case all bets are off), then 2021 can be the year that UT Football....finally, thank the Lord...turned the corner.

But I've been wrong before, a lot, so we'll see.

Go Vols.

I hope you’re right. My fear is that recruits are still going to judge the coaching staff on this season simply b/c their lives don’t stop. Rising seniors that want to play for a contender won’t consider us if we go 5-5. Not doing well this year means we are another year removed from our last East win in 07 and another year that Bama, UGA, and UF extend their winning streaks on us. The ray of hope is having UF in Dec gives HB or JT enough time to develop and take the reigns if need be.

Imo jg will be the qb as long as he is here, regardless of how he plays. He may get pulled as a starter but will still get plenty of playing time. For whatever reason, if one of the other qb makes a mistake they get pulled, and Jg will be back in, because mistakes will happen.

This. The youngsters will learn from him, hopefully.

Again, 2020 will be an "asterisk" season, no matter what. I'd rather go 5-5 this year and be loaded for bear in '21 than go all-in for a season that will end up being an answer to a question in a future version of Trivial Pursuit.

This staff has proven they can recruit top talent. Our 2020 record won't have much influence either way on that. This is a chance, what with everyone getting an extra year of eligibility, to fill in gaps and recruit over the 3-star talent. I'd expect this staff to deliver on all points.

Go Vols.

That would worry me. He hasn't played a down here and did not leave UGA as an impact player or team leader.

Good thing we will do better than 5-5

Kirby intentionally sent him here in order to reduce our scholarship offers. It was shrewd (Smart)

The light needs to come on for this young man, or he will waste a huge opportunity

Reads like an academic issue, but it's really vague.

Agreed. BUT, it also sounds like he did not see starting this year. Somebody rolled him, he may be looking to get back on the field as a starter once Palmer is gone. If that has happened, who was it?

I will pretend I didn't read this comment 😜
Yet you responded to it??
It's a simple situation, in that this whole season is an open experiment. Gibbs could play his way into some NFL money this year and then leave. Or he could get really sick. Either one is HIS choice. He's lost someone to this virus. More than likely his family is worried about him...
not that hard to understand 😑

I think his response is directed at the poster's statement that football shouldn't be played this year, not about Gibbs decision..

This kid is very talented and was looking like he would be a special player when he came to UGA. His issues were failing tests (both academic and the other kind). After multiple issues it was apparent he didn’t or couldn’t change. was hoping the light would come on and maybe it will one day.

Some here had him as a starter at WR.

I had him pegged as a starter and he might even have been the #1 WR. Feedback from him playing the scout team indicated that he was exceptional and quite a handful for the DBs. Gibbs is a fast athlete too.

I wouldn't rule out staff asking him to play secondary next season with potential of Bryce going pro early and Shamburger graduating. Especially if more than one FR WR excels this season.

CJP said he was doing well academically and said that he still practices with the non starters. Since he is still practicing, it defeats the purpose of isolation from the virus.

I wonder if he is doing this to get in another RS or to maybe get an advanced degree (Masters, PhD, etc) for cheap. I'm pretty sure he would have been a starter or a top 5 WR in the rotation.

Geeze. Real really weird career move at this juncture for this kid. The chances of him ever actually contributing anything to us seems to be slipping away

Yep. I'd venture to say that the best we've gotten out of him will be eliminating his chance to help UGA as an upperclassman. My expectations for him ATP are in the slim to none range.

Maybe with jones transferring in and some of these freshman doing well he just decided to wait till next year
Could be. However, the competition will be much stronger next year. Regardless of his reasons, I am not in a position to question his decision.
