To Protect and to Serve II

This past Saturday, we lost a dispatcher in a horrific vehicle accident. She was on her way home after her 12-hour shift. I got called out to help cover calls, as re-routing traffic took more people than we had available. I never went to the scene; I knew better.

I knew her, and I know her Dad, who is a DNR Ranger. He and I sort of grew up together starting back in 2000 with me as a new Deputy, and him as a new Ranger. We worked together a lot, and he and I were and remain good friends. Broke my heart to see him lose his daughter.

There are a lot of "Crooked / Stupid / Overzealous Cop" posts in this thread, and I'm okay with that. Where corruption exists, it should be exposed, rooted up, and burned...just like any other invasive weed. This is not really the "To Protect and Serve" thread, it's the "Those Who Fail to Protect and Serve" thread, and I'm okay with that as well, for the most part.

But here's a headline you didn't see this past weekend: "Crusty Old Part-time Deputy Drives Around Answering Calls for Six Hours With Tears in His Eyes".

Saturday sucked.
The funeral is really going to suck.

I hate to hear that. Years ago I was with my best friend when the police pulled up to his house to inform him and his father that his younger sister had died in an accident. To think about it today is still upsetting

The funeral is really going to suck.

It was held Thursday. The procession was a good one. We had to stay in the parking lot during the service. Due to COVID restrictions, only immediately family were allowed in the church. The church streamed the service so we could watch it outside in our vehicles.

This is my 4th LODD and related. One of out Sgt's was shot and killed back in 2000; we lost two deputies within the last 4 years to cancer, one of them only 44 years old; and now this.

It doesn't get any easier.

All Lives Matter.

Just because the first was old doesn't mean the point was invalid. Was just pointing out that this should not be news to anyone.
It's probably news to parents that think their kids are going to be protected if there is a uniformed policeman roaming the halls.

Just because there is a ruling that they are under no obligation legally, doesn't mean that they won't. Just saying.

And, just for making a point, they have.

As soon as the lady opened the door, the cop said, "Hello, Amy..." So they knew her name. Yet, why the nonsense at the end about needing her name? Plus, they are at her house, so they have ways of getting her name. Which they proved at the very end. F&&kin cops...

So why is there a ruling saying cops don't have to protect anyone but themselves while they ride around in cars that say "to protect and serve"?
eta
My local police slogan is "an honor to serve, a duty to protect"

Read the decisions, it's there for you to see. It's for liability, of course, particularly in the SC decision regarding Castle Rock.

Your beef is with lawyers, not cops.

Again I say, if you think these "good ole boy" cops are going to turn down an order to remove your guns from the citizens, you are being delusional. Just how many Northeastern/California liberals do you think work for the TWRA?

That’s why I repeat it every so often.
I don’t want anyone to forget in the gun debate that the police are under no obligation to help you
