Paracentesis sucks ass, or so sez my wife. I don't want a 10 gauge needle stuck anywhere, specially my stomach.

Swabbing mucous membranes is a common way to test for respiratory diseases. Strep throat, etc.

I’m sure there are more sophisticated tests (blood tests for antibodies etc), and all tests have some false positives and false negatives.
