Coronavirus (No politics)

I'm curious. How does testing kits save the day? Yep, you've got it now go home and rest.

It could help you focus on and isolate patients in the hospital so you don’t have to wonder how many people have it and possibly increase exposures as a result. Could help with mask conservation if you can quickly rule out patients in triage. It won’t change everything but it would certainly be helpful.

I'm not saying I'm the only one that's right.

I'm saying a poster that simultaneously claimed an infection hitting an additional 500 Georgians (0.00005% of the population) was hard evidence of the spread of the illness, while moments before making an argument that countries were in bad shape indicated by a "high" percentage of the population having infection, was being misleading at best.

There are generally multiple ways of interpreting data like these. For example, NYC is the hardest hit US location. You could postulate it is because of the population itself (greater number of people). the large number of people in close proximity, the cosmopolitan aspect - foreign people constantly coming and going, the prevalence of ethnic neighborhoods, ... , or all of them in concert. The one I tend to consider most important is the large number of people in close proximity; and if that truly is the driving force, then the preventive measures are important to prevent overwhelming the medical system. It's simple odds that if you are in groups of people constantly that you chance of exposure is perhaps exponentially increased. Those people are exposed not only to others in your groups but to others in other groups with whom they associate - and sometimes it just takes one to move what you don't want between groups. Not really a lot different from business meetings where one group meets to get the commandments and then carry the commandments to other meetings for wider dissemination.

Tuaculum University student just tested positive for Covid after returning from spring break.
I live in Tusculum and go through the campus every day. I sold my former house where I lived for 17 years to the college, where they recently built the Meen Center on campus. The college is a ghost town. They shut it down, evacuated the dorms and sent everyone home. They all have to be out by 5 p.m. today. People are over there loading up and leaving as we speak.

The one that tested positive went in a car with 6 others to Spring Break. I would assume that if one rides in a car with 6 others, that they probably will get it too.

So every year the flu hits we react the same way? What happened in 2017? Not a word. 61,000 deaths worldwide but the media didn't create the panic it has over this. You're trying to rationalize crippling this country economically. Immune compromised individuals will always be a high risk group. The problem is now, every time someone gets a cough they run to the hospital because of the false reporting of it's virulence.

I’m not trying to rationalize anything, I’m looking down the barrel of a 2 to 8 week (Or more) furlough while my wife has already been sent home. I’d rather absolutely none of this happen. That out of the way...I have questions.

Ok, so you believe the reporting about how virulent the virus can be is 100% false? What about how contagious the virus is? Is that also false?

If old and immunosuppressed individuals “will always be a high risk group”, what do you propose be done with them during this outbreak?

The businesses, both large and small, that have voluntarily shut down or scaled back operations...why did they do that?

it's a real virus. impacting people's lives.

Flu killed 20-30K last year, with a vaccine. This will unfortunately have similar consequences. Or, as my tea party doctor says 'at most, its another seasonal thing like flu etc'.

WHO says 'wake up, be ready', don't panic.

Wash your hands, use sanitizer, socially distance. We are the carriers. Dont be an ass and be around 60+ or really anyone else.

Health care workers will need our help.

The biggest threat isnt the virus.
To be fair, the WHO also believed China when they said it couldn't be transmitted human to human

Now we are learning a lot more people are infected than previously believed. This means several things. The virulence of this virus is grossly overstated. The mortality rate is much lower than previously stated. People are walking around with no symptoms or they are recovering in days. The aged community with immune problems make up the majority of deaths as with any virus outbreak. The reaction to this outbreak has been fueled by an irresponsible media creating tremendous economic damage to this country.
Trump was right when he said journalists are resorting to sensationalism instead of reporting the facts

Panic is crippling our economy to a point where we will be digging out of the whole for a while

Georgia is up to 20 deaths out of 555 cases and while I understand those are primarily the ones who are showing symptoms but that is a pretty high number thus far.

I see there are still some who don't consider the danger of this to be real. That's fine. More air to breathe in the future.

Pick any of the other parts of the economy.

Unless it’s your contention that they have not stopped or slowed down.

Not my contention at all.

You act like retail was the only closure due to loss of foot traffic. Which industry has shut down for some other reason?

No confirmed cases in the county I live in yet...2 confirmed in county in which I work and total of 4 in surrounding counties.

Sectors of the economy that don’t depend on foot traffic...of which there are many.

I have a feeling we’re looking at the economy in different ways.
