Maurer’s Instagram Post

Pruitt has shown no inclination for playing any other QB than Guarantano. If he stays for 2020, battling Bailey for the backup spot isn't in Maurer's best interest if he can go to a team with a competent QB coach and have a legit chance at starting in 2021.
I think Pruitt favored JG's experience. It is now up to BM to close that gap. That said, Pruitt benched JG multiple times this year and definitely gave Maurer a shot. Barring injury, Maurer probably starts the last 2/3's of the season.

Pruitt would like to have a QB claim and own the job. That he continues to bench JG... indicates he's aware JG isn't that guy right now.

Dude he has put Maurer in several times. Tonight he was trying to throw an interception and couldn’t. Let football people make football decisions.

I guess the question is does Maurer think he can transfer some place and play.
Does he sit one year because of the transfer or does he stay here and sit. When you got HB coming who some think could start but probably won't more than likely JG starts again.
Toss Shrout and Hill who is going to want to play in to the mix and now it becomes decision making time. I'm sure BM has read all the HB love post and has to know who probably is the future.
Pruitt has shown his colors as far as QB play. 1 with the most experience is allowed multiple mistakes. The rest aren't allowed but 1-2 series.
I also think JT could go some where and light it up
I have been critical of JG. I think BM has a ton of potential. But the reason JG played is management of the O. He was several orders of magnitude better at it than BM... as you would expect a RS Jr to be compared to a Fr.

Why should Maurer fear Bailey? Worst case Maurer can go through the spring to see how things develop. He can still make a decision during the summer.

He's a true Fr who challenged an established RS Jr for the starting job on moxie and raw talent. If he chooses to transfer then I wish him well.... but why would he? Anyone who believes JG is invincible at this point needs their head checked.
He needs to bury his face in film and playbook so Chaney doesn't have an excuse for letting JG play

I doubt Shrout is transferring. Wouldn't even make sense at this point. He loves it in Knoxville, his gf is at UT, and if he graduates after 3 years, he could transfer w/o sitting out a year, which makes more sense.

Not sure about Maurer. Maurer has a shot at the starting job next season or 2021. If he leaves, it's sort of an admittance that he thinks Bailey is going to win the competition against him.
Or it’s an acknowledgement that he feels he won’t get a fair shot. Trust me.... he’s not worried a bit about bailey.

I think BM in his earlier games did a good job with the line but after he got hurt that 2nd time it was bench city. The little time he got tonight wasn't enough to shake off all that sitting and not being in a groove with game time play.

As for fearing HB. It's not so much about fear but whether HB be the one being groomed more. I mean the kid balled out in 7A and playing top tier HS.
There's already been freshmen that could start and take their teams deep. HB may be just that player...

Guess we'll see but you're right. Spring training should tell him where he's at but like I said Hill can be just as good of a game manager as JG and has more college playing time than BM so there's that also

He literally threw into double/triple coverage three times.

And JG threw an actual pick 6, along with at least 2 other near interceptions. Not to mention spending the fist half consistently throwing the ball 2 feet too high for all of his receivers.

The difference is that JG got all of the first team reps in pracrice and still played like hot garbage for 95% of his playing time, while Maurer gets second team reps and gets yanked after his first mistake even though he was moving the offense.

Maurer was really bad. Should have been picked twice.
Maurer made bad reads but put the ball where he wanted it. JG for the most part seemed to make the right reads but was consistently late and frequently off target.

This game shouldn't have been close. It only was because JG played so poorly.

He's got too much potential to sit behind JG another year with Harrison Bailey coming in as well.

Especially with a staff ,that at the moment, is not very adept at developing QBs.
Are you sure they're not adept? Could it be they've maximized all potential available? Give us some evidence they're not adept versus what I just said about potential. I can't see how anybody could milk anything more out of Guarantano, so what do you have?

Man as disappointing as it is for me to type this...I think he should transfer. I’ll never understand what Pruitt has for Jg. Jg is a terrible qb in ever way. He’s not an accurate passer, he doesn’t make great decisions and have a great mind for the game, and he’s about as unathletic as I e get seen play qb for us. That’s all there is to it. Hasslebeck said something tonight to the effect of “the coaches believe that Maurer is the more talented player but that Jg knows the protections better”. He then proceeded to say the old adage that if your scheme is too complicated to get your best players on the field, you need to simplify your schemes. All that being said Maurer is a small guy and I definitely think he’ll have trouble staying healthy for long wherever but he should get the opportunity to win the job here. But he won’t. I’m hisnine drive tonight (which was a really tough spot to be brought in as they had al the momentum and we’re smelling blood in the water) he led a very effective scoring drive.

Look, I’m not saying JG is great but Maurer is not a panacea. He is seriously flawed and as a coach scares the h*** out of me. I still contend that Shrout is the most physically talented qb on the roster but JG is the overall best shot at winning. Maybe next fall that will change.

I’ll take Maurer with another offseason of conditioning and training over another year of JG. JG needs to spend a lot of time in a chair at a sports psychiatrist’s office. I’d like to see Maurer and Bailey duke it out to be the starter, Shrout as a third option, the kid from Maryland can play on the scout team and add depth. He’ll be getting a free degree out of it.

His “flaw” is lack of experience to make better decisions. That fixes itself over time but you need the coaches that understand that and are willing to make the sacrifice NOW for the greater good of the future. *ie Bo Nix/ Gus. As a coach I’m sure you know this. We KNOW what JG is at this point. Do we KNOW what Maurer could be given the same opportunity? No. So as a coach myself, right now, I agree he scares the hell out of you. But as a coach you gotta see the potential of how hard he would be to defend once he played enough for the game to slow down. That third down conversion was all him and natural talent. He improvised off schedule. That 8 yard run was pocket awareness and mobility. Those near ints were bad decisions but right on target. That’s a deadly combination of skills once he gets it and the last kind of qb you wish to see playing against you. If he leaves I’m telling you, in the future we’ll be looking back on Pruitt and right now kicking ourselves and blaming Pruitt for how he handled it.

It is crazy to think of all the QBs who failed and transferred from Tennessee, before succeeding at other schools. We have a couple of coaches who should be able to develop them. But hush.

Maurer didn’t look happy and I don’t blame him. I hope he sticks it out because I think he can and will beat out Bailey if it fair. Although it certainly seems he won’t be given that opportunity so there’s a possibility of adding another one to that list.

JG will be the quarterback going into the 2020 season
