That looks like a nice tree. Ive given some thought to the Silverleaf (it's parent), heard it has some drought tolerance. Would only be suitable for certain situations though, I think. ATX is a tough place for maples, especially w/ all the deer. You guys use any special deer deterrent techniques up there?

Silver's are pretty when they're disease free. The silver flash of leaves right before a storm, lol. Their growth is fast and they are hardy. Trouble is their soft wood is easy target for borers, ergo woodpeckers. They're considered undesirable for loggers and generally one of first to go when Power Company comes through.

The City & County will put plastic or corrugated rubber around the base. Deer aren't really big enough to get to Maple Trees.

I call on areas from Mtn Cty to Carter Cty, where deer are more prevalent. I see netting and wiring around gardens, but, not trees. Even most fruit bearing trees are left open.

Hate to be the Harvey Updyke up in here but can we kill the tree discussion? Trees completely overrated.

Trees need love too!
