SEC-affiliation aside, we have a rivalry with Kentucky and Calipari has never once personally insulted Barnes or taken a shot at the university. As much as I dislike Kentucky, at least Calipari seems to have some genuine respect for his opponents and keeps things above the belt.
Also, and just my personal opinion, with it being crystal clear now that Memphis is paying players that is yet another reason why we shouldn't give them the stage. Until Penny is gone, I don't see any reason why wee should give an American Conference high school the time of day, especially considering their coach conducts himself in an unprofessional and frankly childish manner.
Yes, the Bone callout was where it begins, in my opinion. Refresh my memory if I'm incorrect, but didn't the Memphis player start that verbal exchange first with Bone?IMO, this rivaly was put on hold the moment Hardaway called out Jordan Bone by name after last year's game. You just don't do that as a coach. I think Barnes could have handled the balled-up fists and "get the f out of here Rick Barnes" comments, but not calling out one of his players.
It does hurt the Vol fans in the western part of the state, and it might have a slight impact on recruiting Memphis but Barnes isn't going to put up with that nonsense. I would LOVE to see another home-and-home with Virginia now that we don't have Cuonzo running our program into the ground anymore. Or maybe Texas? Michigan St? Ohio St?
