Another thing, I really wouldn't want to be associated with Memphis basketball right now. The NCAA just found an out with Kansas and they're going to hammer Memphis for playing that kid.

We should try to work out a deal with Michigan or Michigan State to play a game in Detroit and one in Memphis. I can only imagine the Tiggers reaction to that.

SEC-affiliation aside, we have a rivalry with Kentucky and Calipari has never once personally insulted Barnes or taken a shot at the university. As much as I dislike Kentucky, at least Calipari seems to have some genuine respect for his opponents and keeps things above the belt.
Also, and just my personal opinion, with it being crystal clear now that Memphis is paying players that is yet another reason why we shouldn't give them the stage. Until Penny is gone, I don't see any reason why wee should give an American Conference high school the time of day, especially considering their coach conducts himself in an unprofessional and frankly childish manner.

Kentucky v. Tennessee is a legit, old school rivalry. UT is once again holding up its end of the deal after years of beatings. I don't care for Calipari, but he is and always has been a talented coach who, if I understand it correctly, was actually one of the people who encouraged Barnes to take the UT job in the first place. Those two act like they respect one another although I'm sure they both want to beat the other badly.

Memphis State (yea, I know) is different. To me, Hardaway is a gimmick coaching choice. He was a very talented player. But he had has no legit college coaching pedigree when he was hired and he was selected because he was flashy and, likely, because of his history of financial support. He acted like a spoiled punk when he lost to UT and I doubt he will change in the future. Barnes did nothing to deserve his disrespect.

I have no problem with dumping Tiger High, although I really do like the City of Memphis and think UT is its citizens' real state university. How about scheduling an annual neutral-site OOC game in Memphis against rotating, but genuine, basketball powers like Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, UVA, etc.? That would allow West Tennessee fans to attend a UT game while showing the UT flag in one of its biggest cities on a regular basis without having to play a mid-major like the Tiggers. Maybe Barnes could even invite Hardaway to attend a game as UT's guest so he could observe and learn how big time coaches act.

IMO, this rivaly was put on hold the moment Hardaway called out Jordan Bone by name after last year's game. You just don't do that as a coach. I think Barnes could have handled the balled-up fists and "get the f out of here Rick Barnes" comments, but not calling out one of his players.

It does hurt the Vol fans in the western part of the state, and it might have a slight impact on recruiting Memphis but Barnes isn't going to put up with that nonsense. I would LOVE to see another home-and-home with Virginia now that we don't have Cuonzo running our program into the ground anymore. Or maybe Texas? Michigan St? Ohio St?

Yes, the Bone callout was where it begins, in my opinion. Refresh my memory if I'm incorrect, but didn't the Memphis player start that verbal exchange first with Bone?

Only thing good bout Penny was them shoes he had back in 1996 ... was in 8th grade and could not afford ... but the success of them kicks was bigger than his playing/coaching career combined.
