Game thread: LADY VOLS VS. ETSU

Mercy, that was a fairly ugly game...We have lots and lots of work to do to be competitive against a lot of teams...Some of our girls are very poor shots, especially right under the basket.

Green played very well....Horstson has to learn to shoot, and not drive every ball like a fullback at the goal line...T Key, to me, was not a bright spot, not sure what some of you guys saw in her.

Refs called everything against us....Lots of fathom calls. In any event, a win is a win.

I like it. And Green first off the bench. I like Green, but I feel like Brown brings the necessary experience and steadiness that could help when there are two freshmen on the floor.
It's hard to keep Green off the court IMO.

Horston
Green
Davis
Brown
Key

Bench rotation:
Burrell
KK

After that, who knows. Saunders looks like she'll be on the bench for awhile, the Aussie shooter hasn't proven she can shoot, there are better options than McCoy and Massengill...well, it's obvious.

I'd probably throw Kamera in there first...

Green looked good, Brown made the shots she should have (as opposed to most of her teammates) and Horston showed glimpses why she was rated so highly. Still, a 2 point game in the last minute against ETSU is not inspiring.
I switched over to the Notre Dame game during timeouts and between quarters. They have similar problems to ours. They just beat Fordham in a game that was in doubt with a couple of minutes left. Plus, their starting center, Mik Vaughn, went down with a knee injury. As poorly as we played tonight, I still think we should beat ND when we play them next week.

What I saw in T key was she kept the ball above her head multiple times... she had fairly good timing in her shot blocking. That was something not even Russell did as a freshman. Now her free throws could use improvement and if she develops more strength and 8-10 ft jumper she is going to be a good one.

Stop shooting the three 3 of 18, turnovers 16 to many, only 2 steals which is ridiculous for this team, and 29 fouls which better not happen again or it will be a loss. Their little guard went 15 of 31 from the field and had 10 rebounds. She scored 41 of ETSU's 68 points we should trade for her before we leave Johnson City.

Geez I feel bad for ND if Vaughn's injury is serious. They may need some walk ons just to have enough bodies to field a team.

She also had 7 steals!

Being undisciplined!
I thought we might stop or adjust at halftime but came out and fouled again. The biggest disappointments in the game was no one could guard that one players, only two steals to their 9, and 29 fouls awful. 30 of 82 36 percent and we shot 18 threes only made three so we need to stop shooting them. That is 15 possessions that we could go inside to Key. The three should go to Brown, Davis, and maybe Green is she makes her first one. Rennie has not shown she can shoot the three in the USA she is 0 for 8 in the two games.

There were some bright points and im glad they got the win, but losing that game would have been a disaster. The sec will be tough for tennessee this year

I saw part of the SC game. They are the team to beat in the SEC IMO. They played with a lot of discipline. Their freshman center is a beast. She had a triple double, but the most impressive thing about her was her decision making. She's an excellent passer and played a very heady game. So glad that UConn didn't get her!

I wish we HAD started with our very young team
Horston outplayed Jaz and Key outplayed KK

Jaz can't shoot. She has one of the worst shooting percentages I can remember for a Lady Vol. She will always be a huge liability on the court that you will have to work around. I wasn't able to watch the game, but I will eat my hat if she hit more than one shot. And it's not like other areas of her game are more productive because they aren't.

KK is just not good. Too slow, with a poor repertoire of moves and a poor feel for the game. She can hold her own against equally ponderous and deliberate players but that's about it.

Horston and Key have to grow up fast and every minute they don't get in favor of the other two is wasted. Brown is a journeyman type player, but I could tell from the exhibition game that she will be more productive than some of the others with better credentials even just hopping around on her one good leg.

There are lots of holes to fill on this team, and a whole recruiting year is being wasted in filling them. This is going to be a long slog. I think it was a huge mistake not to have kept an ace recruiter.

Very, Very poor coached team.....!!!! What else can be said? Oh, the Lady Vols get the win..

I didn't think it could worse than HW coached team......perhaps I was wrong.

Haha well technically you can also say Kellie is off to a better start than Holly who lost her first game with more talent than Kellie has right now...

This was really a bad game to start the season on the road. ETSU has one girl that is a super star we couldn't guard her. Glad we won ETSU really brought it down the stretch when we just couldn't score.
Only if we had lost. The team proved they could win a close game. I think that may be better for them than an easy win. They survived against adversity, and that’s a good thing. Last time a new TN Lady Vol Coach won her first game, that was an away game, was in 1922, so that’s nice for Coach Kellie, too. Lots of learning film to watch, and lots of confidence to build. GLV!

Can't wait to see SC in person for the first time when they play at Maryland on Sunday.
