While this may have worked at one point in time, this system is clearly broken. Boosters and agents are actively involved at every big-time school and are a primary reason we are see the same schools at the top every year in college athletics. I would argue this is an opportunity to setup an established list of reputable agents, and to weed out some of the corruption currently abusing the system. It is set up solely to keep competitive advantage out of amateur sports. It's set up to protect the student athlete from blood thirsty scum agents. It's set up so boosters can't give their school an advantage over another school simply because of money. And the scholar student doesn't get any monetary benefit on their intellectual property they come up within the University, the University gets all profits. I have no problem with either student only allowed scholarship money and living expenses the 4 or 5 years while they are being trained by the University to be successful later on in life. They can always collect when they leave school. I also don't have a problem with them paying their own way through school if they are collecting disposable income on their likeness.
The concern is for trying to keep the college game the college game. We have pro sports and while college isn’t as “pure” as we’d all like, this just pollutes it more. No one is forced to sign a scholarship or play under the rules of amateurism.
As an alumni and a parent of a current student I think I have every damn write to protest any f’n thing I think undermines amateur athletics.
If the association determines its in their best interest. This isn’t a matter of capitalism

Well then that begs the obvious question of what does an “association” know about what is or is not in the best interest of each individual student athlete? To me, it’s a scary thought thinking that a large board of wealtht men and women seem to get to be the arbitor of what is in the best interest of the individual rather than the individual themselves.
I think there should be true minor leagues. I just don’t think they belong on college campusesSo let’s get rid of the NCAA, a corrupt an inept organization, treat major college sports like they really are (a minor league system) and let these athletes making money off their name and image, just like EVERY AMERICAN IN THIS COUNTRY CAN AND SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO.
Not too mention how many of these same people thing the NCAA is a joke and corrupt anyways.
The schools are members of the association. So it’s the schools collectively determining this. If you don’t feel like the school is doing a good job representing their athletes then don’t go to that school.Well then that begs the obvious question of what does an “association” know about what is or is not in the best interest of each individual student athlete? That’s fine. That’s an entirely different argument. As long as you’re fine as the university runs basically rec programs then.
If the college game was the same as it was in the 1980’s to 1990’s then maybe I’d tend to agree with more of them, but the fact of the matter is the game has grown far beyond what it used to be. This isn’t a game anymore it’s a multi-billion dollar industry that the rich are getting richer off of and yet we continue to blindly support the NCAA because people believe the life lessons and experience these kids get should be good enough.
I love how people try to make a “capitalism” argument.......and don’t really understand capitalism.
If an athlete could go pro right out of high school (if they wanted) everything would be solved. Then any athlete (who wanted to) could start “making money off of their likeness” or simply start making money from their sport. Also college athletes (those who chose this route) would still be amateurs.
You’re absolutely right! I agree that 18 year olds should be allowed to play professional sports and think it’s wrong what the NFL and NBA do.

Wonder why there is not a market for professional sports before the NBA or NFL accepts them? If the 5 stars would rather be paid than play as amateurs and people would watch, you would think such leagues would be popping up...
