It's good our boosters recognized gold when they held it in their hand and didn't let the AD screw up another coaching situation. Paying Rick what he is worth was the right thing to do, no question.
I manage to live in the conflict of resenting Barnes for his money grab and loving him for what he’s done and is doing. If anyone has a problem with it they can eat a bowl of f&*k.Why do we have to continue to bring this up. There are about twenty different versions floating around about how this went down. I believe most of our is malarkey. Barnes seemed legitimately that it was taken by some that he was playing the raise game and that the situation had been taken out of context by a reporter that did not check their facts. Regardless, what does it matter?
His seeding has a lot to do with it.Sorry I hurt ur feelings with facts.
Feel free to show me a post season record to dispute me though.
And a few sweet 16s appearances with elite talent like Durant does not make one an elite coach.
And, rumor is rumor. It could have happened or not. Glad Barnes is here no matter what. Was totally blind sided by Barnes with the whole UCLA debacle. Fulmer learned about it through the papers. Barnes was gone. Fulmer was ready to move on and start the search, but a few big boosters went to him and told him whatever it takes, keep him here. Then phil got Barnes the phat contract with the big money. - Story From a personal friend of Phil so May have been a little biased but hey, info is info.
Me personally, I still look at Barnes a little differently now than I did previously. Have no doubt he is a good coach and we are lucky to have him, but still feel a little blind sided myself.
Regardless, I’m still excited about the season. But if we struggle this year and miss the bubble, there is gonna be a lot of barking and bitterness bc of the aforementioned items even more so and questions about the contract. Either way, we are in for an exciting season. GBO![]()

His seeding has a lot to do with it.
When seeded 1-4 he had 2 s16s, 2 e8s and 1 f4. (All in his first 10 seasons)
While here 1 sw16 with a 2 seed.
Does better when playing the lower seeded teams.
But, I do agree with you. Like to see him improve on it here.
TWSS?Isn't CRB's mother about a 2 hour drive from Knoxville? Perhaps he wants to stay close to her and just didn't blab about it. You never see his wife in public, so maybe he wants to keep family somewhat anonymous and it's easier to just say that UT was better financially. Salary is determined by the market. He gets a lot because we want him here. There's nothing to see here... don't know why anybody is butthurt over his package. We've fired or run off about a half dozen basketball coaches in the last 30 years. I don't know why some can't be happy that we have a real good one now.
What evidence do you have of this? The only reason Barnes entertained UCLA was because of Fulmer. Barnes felt like Fulmer didn't show the interest in supporting the basketball program both financially and in actual time spent traveling with the program.
If Fulmer had been a better AD and cared more about the basketball program then Barnes would have never even looked around. Blame Barnes all you want for looking at a blue blood and getting a raise, but the reason it got that far is Fulmer. So if you're mad about the entire situation make sure your anger is guided in the proper direction.
