Crazy thing though...had Maurer made a bit better decisions and not got hurt. I have no doubt we could have hung 30+ on them and really opened the game up.

Losing Maurer changed the game plan moving forward, and honestly I don't blame Pruitt & co at all for adjusting offensively to the game. The only way Miss. State was going to win that game is if they were able to tire out the defense and start making chunk gains, so the best way to prevent that is every drive on offense needs to eat as much clock as possible even if we end up punting. JG not missing any of the limited throws was big as well.
I think that was JGs best performance as a Vol. The kid stepped up. If he played like that every time we would be at worst 4-2 right now.

Eh, it's more Florida compared to Tenn. If Pruitt and Mullen were switched I'm guessing Pruitt would have done a little better and Mullen would have done a little worse up to this point. I'm not so sure Mullen would have us in a much better spot, maybe a little, but not the results he's getting at Florida.

I do think that sometimes too, but McElwain was pretty bad there. We'll see how Mullen does long term.

JG probably would have improved. WRs are comparable to Florida. Mullen is superior at coaching QBs compared to Chis Dienke. Grantham is very good too. But Florida has better parts on defense for sure.

We’d be 4-2. But that’s not saying much.

Mullen would likely have had the program in a better spot right now, in large part due to the experience he had as a head coach in this league. When comparing the two, my gut has always told me that Pruitt has a higher upside than Mullen. That being said, I think Mullen is a very solid coach who would have had us winning somewhere between 8 and 11 games year in and year out. Wouldn't call him an elite recruiter by any stretch but I've always felt that Tennessee recruits itself. If you put forth effort at all you're going to get players here.

I am a rough ion.

Also a science nerd.

Don't care.

Rough ions! I didn't even go there at all! I was led purely by the auditory aspect of ruffians.

Truth be told though, if my wandering mind meets a fork in the road with one path leading to scholarly submersion into the intricacies of rough ions and the other path leading to fanciful speculation about the implications of rough onions, I'm definitely choosing the path of least sensibility.

3-3 imo. The JG mental block wasn't identifiable in practice. The BYU game was too late for dancing to help.

In 1996 (part of the "glory days"), we entered the season ranked #2 in the country, behind Nebraska; with the greatest QB to ever strap on a helmet. We averaged almost 40 pts a game that year, and had future NFL players all over the field.

We entered the Memphis game ranked #6 in the country, losing to Florida earlier in the year, by a touchdown. Memphis won 4 games that season...let me repeat that again, Memphis won 4 games in 1996: Missouri (not the Missouri of today), Tulane, Cincinnati, and us...the #6 ranked team in the country...a team that was 7 and 1 coming in, and still in the thick of the National Championship picture...and, they held us to only 17 points.

That loss kept us from finishing in the Top 5. Again, I reiterate, Memphis won 4 games that year...they were Georgia State in those days; and beat a UT team that was far away from coming off a 4 and 8, 5 and 7 back to back seasons. When we lost to Memphis in '96, we were one of the top 5 programs in the country, with the best player in school history...Memphis won 4 games...Missouri, Tulane, Cincinnati, and us. Georgia St. is not even in the same zip code as that loss.

Btw, the LSU loss in the '01 SEC Championship, is the only other loss that I will even consider may be worse than the Memphis game. In fact, it's probably worse, considering we still haven't truly recovered from it.
Memphis would have never won that game if instant replay had been around. I was in one of the sky boxes and they kept showing the play over and over. The kid was clearly down and the play should have been over. But, that was a long time ago :cool::cool:

If we play that game plan with JG against Bama we will lose 75-0.
No that’s what will happen if we let maurer play and use the game plan we’ve had with him in. We will try to pass too much and he will throw 3 ints and bama will score every single time.

No matter which QB it is, I want to see a lot of ball control. This bama team isnt as stout defensively. They really haven’t been since becoming a more spread team. I want to see us punch them in the mouth over and over. Maybe we will lose 35-14 or something
