Back to the Luck discussion-

I’ve become buddies with a guy who played in the NFL and basically didn’t stick because of injuries. We were talking this summer about his plans going forward- the cfl had a spot for him and he had some other options. In talking to him about the surgeries that he had gone through and all the rehab, it just didn’t seem worth it to me.

I can easily see how a guy like Luck would just want some of his sanity back. Being injured, sick, or in pain all the time is mentally exhausting. I have Crohn’s disease and it’s been rough on my family over the years watching the cycle of health and sickness- I can’t imagine how much worse it would be if it was also tied to my life’s work. These guys are fairly young, even Luck is only 29 and college guys even more so- let’s think twice before our ranting about how soft they are.

tl;dr Don’t throw rocks at houses you don’t understand.

I have thought about this during the week and realize now that these guys go through more than we realize. It's his life, and he has made money. Have no issue with it.

In discussing it with buddies, the one question was timing. There was a suggestion of rehabbing for this latest injury and just see where you are mentally a couple of months into the season. You can always retire near the end of the year.

Yep, they've looked at several scenarios on how to best use him while easing him back. I think he could be very limited Saturday-- minimizing risk but getting him back in the game. They're definitely looking to rotate more bodies to curtail the wear and tear. Once Morris and Wright get up to speed, the OL should be pretty solid. Amazing, really, with all the medical retirements.
Put Wanya & Darnell out there for the 1st snap and don’t take them off the field. Every. Damn. Play.

They need live action reps. Lots of em.

My wife noticed (as she tends to do) how much thinner he was than last season. IMO he never trained because he never intended to come back. Mentally done, injury concerns, what have you...cool. You assess and let the team know before the draft that you’re moving on. Then you get the fond farewell from fans. If you’re on the sidelines a week before the season? It ain’t going to be fond...and it shouldn’t be.

Most likely congenital stenosis at this age. With congenital stenosis, if you have a disc herniation injury, it can be catastrophic in the cervical or thoracic spine (quadriplegic or paraplegic respectively). Not as serious in the lumbar spine.

This is the reason that Cooper Manning quit football (already mentioned). Also Michael Irvin of the Cowboys. Significant cervical congenital stenosis...

I have recommended several medical retirements due to this in the cervical spine. Some have even presented as recurrent stingers (luckily).
Great...I have three herniated discs in my neck, and stenosis...thanks for reminding me how bad it could get..also no insurance..🤔 and that was in 2005, the last time I had MRIs on my neck...

Now you all know why I'm so grumpy, I live in constant mind numbing pain..it literally never stops..
