I don't think that's going to be our problem at all and in fact I think you're fighting the last war.
As we head into kickoff I am thinking defense should be our biggest anxiety and what we need to find out about over the first 4 games. I think it’s reasonable to expect our special teams to be pretty solid and I think it’s also reasonable to expect our offense to take a significant step forward. I think there are a lot of questions on defense. When Pruitt says we're a young football team, he's almost exclusively talking about the defense. jmo.
We basically lost Richmond on offense and that’s it. We have all of our specialists back for special teams. On defense, most everyone focuses on the loss of the 3 starting defensive linemen but we lost a lot more than that. We lost Kirkland and Sapp at linebacker. Kongbo is gone. While not everyone we lost on defense were significant contributors, we lost at least 14 guys on defense or are down that many heading into our first game. 13 of those 14 were/are blue chippers. Some will likely be back, Bituli and Thompson, but for the moment we’re starting out already down arguably our best player at each of the 3 levels on defense.
While we don’t know how our new defensive line is going to perform or how much our secondary will improve, I think most expect our pass rush to improve and to be more consistent. The biggest issue I see with our defense is the inside linebackers. Bituli is expected back at some point but how long before he’s back to 100%? Ignont has had an ankle issue for what seems like most of fall camp. Peterson seems to continue to have an issue with his shoulder. We’ve become so desperate at inside linebacker that near the end of fall camp we moved a 205 pound freshman safety down to the position and a few days after that plucked Banks out of the running back group to shore up the inside linebacker ranks. By almost all accounts our best option at the position is a true freshman in To’oto’o.
I’ve long thought that the key to our improvement this season rested heavily on the improvement in our defense. We’re giving Ansley his first career shot at calling a defense this year and though we have Pruitt to back him up, the real issue as everyone has noted is the lack of experience on that side of the ball, and now perhaps even a dwindling number of bodies, especially for the first few weeks of the new season.
Offenses and special teams won’t win a lot of football games. Last year our young-at-the-time offense scored more points against conference opponents than either MSU or KY, both of whom won a hell of a lot more games than we did. It takes a stout defense to win football games in the SEC and if Pruitt and Ansley can field a decent defense this year with all the challenges we face right now on that side of the ball, then we should just go ahead and build statues for both of them. We’ll know in about 4 weeks whether or not to go on and place the orders in advance. jmo.
