Yes he was electric with the ball in his hands
But many times that was as a runner or returner. Only 5 TDS as a pass catcher compared to 11 for Malone so yea he blows his Pass catching stats away
This has been a well debated topic regarding CP.

To move this discussion to a more generic topic, I try to look at what makes a football player special due to what they bring to the team. I dont think WRs should be limited to how many TDs passes they catch. If a player is producing at the position and causing a team to gameplan around them, they are effective at their position.

I agree with that. I just think CPs issues with poor route running has always kept him from being an elite WR both in college and in the NFL

He still is a guy teams are finding ways to get the ball other than via pass.

So imo he was a good WR for us but a great elite playmaker.

My thing on CP is he never gets grouped in with any of the great WRs that played here when people talk of all time teams and best ever etc. just bc he played for one year and was on a crappy team. Not saying people don’t think he’s good or whatever but you could honestly make the case he is the most explosive player to ever play here.
CP came from JUCO, and was here for one year. He did most of his damage on KR/PR, jet sweeps, and Chaney finding other creative ways getting him the ball in space. He wasn’t even the best Wide Receiver on that team. For those three reasons, it’s hard for me to lump him with the other great WRs of this program. However he was an explosive playmaker, and one of the best overall playmakers we have had in this decade. He could truly takeover and change a game when he got a ball in space. Fun stuff to watch for sure.

Not sure how someone can be thrown into a "best ever" category with a rather mild single season performance.

1086 total yards from scrimmage and 8 total TDs doesn't scream "best ever" in any category. Especially in the same season Hunter had 1083 receiving yards and 9 TDs.

I could see CP's lone season being up there as one of the better seasons by a WR here though, but not sure I can put him ahead of Kent, Nash, Pickens, Meachem, Price, Hunter, McGee, Moore, Washington, Hancock, Seviers, or even Wilson.

Overrated as a recruit yes but by Tennessee people no. I’m talking more of people acted like they were a lot better than they actually were while here. I think over hyped would be the better term.

Most overhyped:
AJ Johnson
Kirkland JR
Justin Martin (breakerboy lol)
Casey clausen*** (i know i know Road warrior and ice man but we won Some games in spite of him bc of a loaded roster. He’s our Trent dilfer so to speak)

Under appreciated:
Dobbs
Meachem
Cordarelle Patterson
Jason Allen
Dan Williams

Dobbs & Clausen are arguably top 5 QBs in UT history I think both get accurate appreciation. I'm not sure I'd call AJ overhyped either 425 tackles and 2nd all-time is impressive, 3 straight years with 100+ total tackles, and he missed 2 games in his senior season because of the accusations he was acquitted of.

I think Martin & DK might be the only ones on either list I agree with...of course I think some of the guys on the Under appreciated didn't gain any respect until post UT days.

There is no way that's true...
I don't think it's wrong to say that Pruitt has added a ton of dudes who run that fast or that guys on our team got faster, but I have a hard time believing that only 2 dudes on our team last year could run 4.6. I mean, Chandler, Taylor, Thompson, Nigel, Flowers, Calloway, and surely some others could run 4.6, right? It is Rutherford so he's probably off by about 32 players knowing him.

Yeah, that's BS. Zero chance that is true. It may not have been a ton of guys but it was more than two.

CP doesn’t get Grouped in with the great WR group because he wasn’t and still isn’t a great WR

CP is a great returner and “utility player”. He just isn’t a great WR
CP is one of the most amazing runners with the ball in his hands that I can remember coming through UT. This is why the Patriots put him in the backfield and just handed him the ball the past year. Doesn't really matter what position you assign him, he was and still is a great runner.

Sounds like Swain fudging the numbers to pump up the fans.

I mean honestly it was a bad communication by the WR and QB had that ball been thrown properly Jumper would have been out of position and that WR would have gained a lot of yards.

But maybe he was the reason the WR wasn’t where he was supposed to be. Who knows.... 🤷🏻‍♂️ Either way he Pick 6’d it and helped his team win.

.....I wasn’t knocking the kid,if anything I was taking up for him lol read the previous response.qb’s messing up and miss reading or throwing behind the receiver happens,it’s part of football you can’t take that away from Colton Because he caught it and could have easily dropped it lol

I didn’t say you were lol. I totally agree with you.

I listened to Coach Doug Matthew’s Big Orange Sunday show yesterday and he talked a lot about Pruitt being a football coach as compared to his predecessors here and he attributed that to Pruitt being hired by a football coach as opposed to the guys who hired his 3 immediate predecessors. He said it’s been our experience when we have a football coach as the athletic director we’ve hired the best football coaches in our history. He also talked about the ways he’s seen Pruitt grow into his job as the head coach this year compared with last.

He talked about some of our young players but I don’t think he said anything that hasn’t already been said, that is, all except for Eric Gray. Of course he focused on the buzz surrounding Gray and thought it was pretty significant that Pruitt who generally is pretty reserved in hyping players, sometimes not even willing to mention names, have been very high on Gray.

But CDM said something else that about Gray and this was news to me. Eric’s birthday is in either October or November and according to Doug, this year Eric will be 20 years old. In other words he’s not your typical 18 year old freshman. He’s pretty close to the same age as Trey Smith and presumably Ty Chandler and Tim Jordan. He’s old enough to be a junior or at least pretty close to it.

Pruitt said in the interview posted Sunday night that in his first semester here, this Spring, while dealing with shoulder surgery, learning the offense, and all the other things that come from trying to get acclimated to college life, Eric had close to a 4.0 GPA in the classroom. If you visit the Aubrey Solomon thread you’ll find speculation that Michigan is dragging its feet on supplying transfer paperwork back to the NCAA. We’ve taken a 5-star defensive tackle away from Harbaugh this year and maybe more importantly we flipped Eric Gray from the Wusserines. Harbaugh may be getting a bit bothered from the repeated beat-downs Pruitt has been dealing out to him. jmo.

Thank you and car accident.
So her parents went from laughing and planning dinner or whatever to never seeing her again.

I didn't want to let mine leave for school this morning. Just makes me sick.
Prayers for the family and for you/ your family. I have the joy to putting my grandson on his school bus each morning and last thing I tell him is “I love you”. Can’t imagine what they are going through.
