The Kerry Blackshear Thread

if we have anywhere near the success that we had this year ( I'm talking number of games won) then Barnes is an exceptional coach. We just lost our top 3 scorers, 4 of the top 6 scorers, our 2 leaders, and the 2 time SEC player of the year. James may end up being a better player than Bone, but he won't be a better PG. We have some serious holes to fill.

I think that James could end up being a far better PG than Bone. Bone was inconsistent. He was good at keeping his turnover rate very low, but was pretty average finishing at the rim, shooting from the perimeter, and creating opportunities for teammates. His assist totals could have been inflated by simply dumping the ball in to Grant. I sure do wish however that he would have returned as a senior. His clutch free throw shooting might be missed.

I think that James will be like Baby Magic. It won't surprise me to see him at PG with Turner at the off guard a lot this coming season... especially in the half court. We probably play more of dual PGs when pressured full court this year, whether it's Bowden, Turner, and/or James on the floor. That is one thing that Bone excelled at. Once inbounded, he could get the ball across midcourt by himself without being pressured into many TOs.

When someone pulls their name out of draft, that means they get a low draft grade, right? Besides an overall grade, do they get some type of evaluation sheet that grades them on specific areas?
Someone mentioned that he was slowest in the combine in his position group.
Try not be biased, but what school could actually improve his stock? It seems like this is what he wants. He would’ve just gone overseas if he didn’t want to improve his NBA stock
Which makes you wonder why he’s visiting his old coach. Also heard that Buzz didn’t do a very good job getting him workouts.

Baby Magic ? I, actually like that comparison and that's what I kind of expect and hope UT gets out of James, too

I think you are really overlooking Bone's effect on our offense. Bone's ability to get to the elbows really helped our offense. Every game he struggled (UK, Aub, LSU), our offense struggled and we lost. Further, Bone would pass the ball up so we could get secondary tranistion baskets(this helped Bowden get out of his funk and Turner doesn't and will not do this).
Further, just think about how our offense stalled the last two years with Daniel and Turner, it is obvious Bone had a big effect on our offense.

I like James also, but he is not a quick guy for a pg and is more of a power driver. Therefore, next year will be about executing our offense

24 hours doesn't seem like a long enough time for Blackshear to get all the info he needs athletically and academically.

I think he’s going there to ask Buzz which team is best for him. Plus, people forget he only took a few visits during recruitment. If you couldn’t go to Europe 5 years ago but all of a sudden each country wants you to visit for free, wouldn’t you?

What? That’s crazy.

Like I said, "inconsistent". He has blazing speed and his decision making improved every year. But I don't think that he was an all time great at running our offense. His quickness made him a pretty good defender and he was a reliable free throw shooter (although I don't think that he got to the FT line often enough). He's an all time top 5 TN PG, but not the greatest. He had a shot at that had he returned. CJ, Rodney Woods, Tony Harris, Johnny Darden, and Danny Shultz probably round out my all time top 6. Maybe add Billy Hahn and Dickey Johnston for the top 8. Not including several combo guards that played a bit of PG too. Tony White was more of a 2 that was kind of sharing PG duties with Fred Jenkins. Tyrone Beaman was a pretty good PG and with Michael Brooks made for an excellent pair of small guards. Jimmy England, John Snow, Houston, Greg Bell, Mike Edwards... primarily shooting guards.

Here is something to think about: Cal is used to talking to prima Donna 17-18 year olds, pandering and spewing bs while throwing ca$h. Barnes on the other hand can talk to a mature 22yo Blackshear honestly, candidly as man! Don’t underestimate Barnes, Williams and Schofield in this entire equation.
I heard Williams and Schofield were busy.

They’ve been “favorites” the last couple years,
I think it’s probably splitting hairs if you’re talking about the 4th best team and 10th best team and that at that point either could go on a run.

And UT has still won 4 of the last 6, 5 of the last 8 and 6 of the last 10 vs the almighty cats lol

For Tennessee basketball, it’s all about the Kerry Blackshear sweepstakes at the moment. The Vols made their pitch to the Virginia Tech transfer during last weekend’s official visit. The buzz we’ve picked up in trying to talk to as many people as possible this week is that Tennessee made a strong impression with Blackshear and his family but not so strong that he was ready to shut things down and make a commitment.Tennessee now has to weather visits to Kentucky, which Blackshear wrapped up on Thursday, and to Texas A&M this weekend.
Conventional wisdom out there right now from many suggests that this has turned into a battle between the Vols’ and ‘Cats for the most coveted grad transfer on the market this offseason. From what we hear though, Florida most definitely feels like they’re still in the chase. The only draw to a rebuilding Texas A&M seems to be the fact that his former head coach Buzz Williams is now in College Station.I think we’ll have a decision soon and I think Tennessee is very much in the middle of things. It’s hard to overstate just how much of an impact landing Blackshear would have on this team.

The only good part of the hire was he was gone and Barnes could be hired.

Worse defense than Pearl, worse offense than Martin. Terrible all around coaching and a clown on the sidelines.

Good riddance. Should have never been hired but it was a blessing in disguise.

Come on, tell us how you really feel about Dirty Donnie.

Buzz got a new phone number, so he has to fly there to ask a question?

I still think we land him ultimately. He's not going to A&M, because they won't be good yet, even with him. It's us or Kentucky.
