He is not worth 5 million a year

When he snuck into the play in game and went on a run against Iowa/UMass/Mercer? I'll take Barnes' 26-9 SEC title every single day.

Barnes beat a 15 seed and you guessed it Iowa this year. Cuonzo didn’t have an embarrassing loss to Loyola either.

As we saw this year, and what casual bball fans fail to understand, is that the postseason is what matters. If you win 30 something games and lose in the first round your year sucked.

Look at AUB. Top ten preseason. Bad regular season. Not even ranked most if the year.

Won in the postseason. Turned their year into a great year. No one will remember all the regular season losses and disappointment.

Who had a better year, UT or AUB?

AUB. Because they went further.

Amen. I try and put it in terms they can wrap their heads around. If the most talented Vols football team in history lost in the outback bowl they would be *****ing bricks and covering their screens in spittle.

Barnes may not be worth $5m in a vacuum, but you have to take into account what would have happened if he left. No coaches from a big program are coming here and the top mid-major coaches were picked over. Then factor in losing GWill, Bone (we may still but it's guaranteed if Barnes leaves), and losing James and Walker and it'd take our next coach 3 years to dig out of that and that's in the rare case he would pan out. You gotta look at the whole picture

Barnes is worth it. Making UT prominent nationally is worthy. Besides Barnes felt dished by not having higher up from administration being present when he was given COY award. He represents our state well. He deserves a raise.

What someone is paid is what the market will bear. Apparently others appreciate Barnes as a coach and what he brings. I’m glad we still have him.

Cuonzo made a S16 quicker than Barnes did and as many tournament wins 🤷🏻🤷🏻‍♀🤷🏻‍♀️

As a bubble team. I’m sure tons of Vols fans would really like to go back to .500 regular seasons and having to depend on a conference tourney run to squeak in the tourney.

Also you must not be a long time Vol fan if you think Barnes’ year 1 roster was comparable to what Cuonzo started with....

Just making the point that the guy who routinely gets picked apart by Vol fans has around the same tourney success as Barnes.

And that what Barnes is doing isn’t some sort of miracle some portray it to be. He’s done a good job.

Grant, Admiral and Bone were all diamonds in the rough. You can teach a lot of things as a coach, but you can't teach heart and these three have plenty of heart.

Same could be said of Jordan McRae, Josh Richardson and Jarnell Stokes.

Walk ons have a lot of heart too. But let's not pretend Barnes just got lucky with a team with big hearts. He maximized the talent and developed these players.

Something he is superior at in comparison to CM

Difference is that if Barnes left, the program would be left in relatively great shape.

Martin left the program in ruins. And How'd his talent stacked teams at Cal do in the tourney? How was his success in the tourney this year?

Im not saying Barnes is a miracle worker, but let's not pretend that Cuonzo is in the same realm of coaching. One is a HOF coach. The other is Cuonzo.

If Barnes starts making $5M/year, then UT fans should adjust and expect better results in the tournament then. You want to be paid like a top ten coach then you better produce like a top ten program. No more getting bounced by Loyola or having a preseason top 10 team not win a conference title or make a Final Four.

I expected better results this year. We JUST make free throws in the first half we go to E8. It’s hard for me to completely fault Barnes when the team makes uncharacteristic mistakes.

I was disappointed in lack of hardware on the season but over all I was more into basketball than I have been since Lofton was here. Honestly this team winning 31 overachieved based on talent level.

Barnes is worth keeping. TN isn’t broke. I really don’t care what he is paid. It’s not tax dollars. I’ll let the millionaire boosters complain if they don’t feel like forting the bill.

All the people claiming regular season wins don't matter are absurd. This season was a ton of fun and brought in countless new basketball fans, tons of revenue, and likely coveted recruits, as well. We also beat KY twice, swept Florida and Vandy, and beat Memphis. Oh, did I mention our #1 ranking?

By the same measure, do football wins not matter if we don't make the 4-team playoff?

Losing Barnes would have been a huge blow to the program. All we've heard in coaching hires over the past decade is how we go cheap. I'm extremely encouraged by CPF's willingness to go big here. Some of you guys need to look at the bigger picture and realize the message being sent to the basketball world: UT IS HERE TO STAY.

5 mill will be new norm for bball coaches in a few years. fball guys are already at 10. crazy. ridiculous and obscene.

CM is a HC Nomad...he's only lasted 3 years at each stop. He thought at Mizzou he hit the lottery with the Porter's We know how that worked out.. One more bad year at Ol Mizzou and he may get a pink slip in his 3rd year at Mizzou.

Its my understanding that Barnes is the 3rd highest paid coach in America now and with that being the case if he wants to be paid like he's elite we better start getting elite results.

No more he's a good, christian, man and we like him.

Now its time to **** or get off the pot.

I had to argue this stuff back during the sitting out the bowl game epidemic. A large number of people on here think that anything short of a championship makes all the other games "meaningless".

Well he’s signed one 5* so far. The other two guys he signed this year? Projects.

And I’m just saying, you start getting paid like a top ten coach, you should produce a top ten program. Top ten programs win conference titles and make Final Fours.

Duke hasn't won their conference since 2009-10, their only conference title in the last 13 years. So, not a top ten program?

You're the one who set the criteria. You said "top ten programs win conference titles and make final fours". Duke doesn't win conference titles and have made two final fours in 13 years. By YOUR criteria, they're not a top ten program.

If you are referring to me I have never once put down Barnes at all.

He is a HOF and the best coach we have ever had by a wide margin.

Anyone who knows basketball knows AU had a better year than us. A Final Four trumps even an undefeated regular season. You are obviously a casual who only watches UTbball if you think we had a better season.

All my Zo stuff has been facts. Dispute them if you can.

What an absurd statement. Many people who "know basketball" don't agree with you at all.

Once again, I'm not sure how you can argue this. Auburn won 30 games this year, we won 31. Auburn went 2-0 against us this year. Auburn kept us from winning the SEC regular season title and then beat us again to win the SECCG, something we've not done in 40 years. Then they advanced 2 rounds further than us, making the final 4, the most prestigious thing one can do in CBB outside of winning it all. I do not like Auburn, and I love Tennessee, but they had a better year than Tennessee this year, easily.
