He is not worth 5 million a year

Yes. Casual.

If you don't understand basketball is all about the postseason you are a casual.

Who had the better year? UT or AUB?
Oh I agree Auburn had a better year, no doubt. But one tourney run isn't exactly predictive of how good a coach actually is, due to the randomness involved.

Here is the deal. You do t pay him, you lose Bone, Williams, and the Josiah James gets out of his LOi. So you tank your program back to 15 wins. So rock and hard place. You have to offer him 4.5-5 or you get hammered by fans/media for not trying

Best we can expect to have? Cuonzo Martin made a sweet sixteen. Jerry Green won an SEC title. Don Devoe made the tournament consistently for awhile.

Tennessee is a really good job. We can find someone that will put up results.

"We can find someone." Just saying, I'm a little weary of coaching searches.

K lost to Mercer/Lehigh, Izzo lost to MTSU, Self lost to Northern Iowa, Cal got bounced by the team that got bounced by Loyola. Bennett lost to my UMBC lol. Guess those guys are overpaid.
That’s my point. It’s a crap shoot. Make it to the 16 and hope you are hot, they are not.

BEST AND MOST EXCITING season in a long time. PAY HIM.

I like "Regular Season" Rick, but let's not get carried away. If he leaves, we can still hire a serviceable coach that won't win titles. If he stays, then maybe he learns how to win at tournament ball. I am satisfied with beating UK and UF, so I hope he stays.

If Barnes starts making $5M/year, then UT fans should adjust and expect better results in the tournament then. You want to be paid like a top ten coach then you better produce like a top ten program. No more getting bounced by Loyola or having a preseason top 10 team not win a conference title or make a Final Four.

I can agree with this. Bigger bucks...bigger expectations

Who are these coaches we think we can hire that will get us past the 16? I’m curious because unless we shell out 5mil plus I just don’t see it. Unless we go the up and comer cheap route....which doesn’t work.

I think hes putting himself in that position. I don't see an issue with replacing lanier with a top notch assistant. Barnes is well respected in the coaching community. Recruiting is better and he continues to evolve as a coach. Love the guy and hoping he stays

Casual basketball fans? If you don't understand how freaking random the tournament is, you're lacking an understanding of both basketball and probability lol. It's a mess, and way too volatile to use as the only evaluator of a coach. There's a reason less than 0.5% can guess the final 4, it's crazy. If you're willing to sweep a 31 win season under the rug because we lost in overtime to a darn good Purdue team, I don't know what to tell you.
Just a word of advice....don't even bother trying to discuss coach barnes with that guy. Hes so irrational and wants to put Barnes down while pumping CM, he cant have a logical discussion.

To say Auburn had a better year simply because they went further is asinine. They had a better tourney run. Tenn had the better year.

Barnes is better than Pearl.

AUB had a better season DUE TO THE POSTSEASON.

AUB was top ten preseason. Fell out the rankings and was unranked most of the year. We were number 1 a while month. We finished higher in conference. We got a higher seed. We won more games.

Yet . . . Better year because they got further.

Even with those facts people say the Sweet 16 year was bad because a unranked team in the preseason didn't win 25 games and get a high seed. We won when it counted.

I'll take 21 wins with a Sweet 16 and one bad call from an Elite Eight over 26 wins and a exit in the round of 32 against an underdog every single time. That is a better year.

Just like AU had the same expectations as us this year with a way worse regular season. But still had a better year. The regular season only matters for tourney seeding. Overall wins and losses don't matter.

I say pay him, Phil. Give Barnes what he wants. He has really built a great foundation here at UT. And 4 and 5 stars actually want to come here. I know I don't want another coaching search and possibly us crapping out on getting a coach as great as him. I know that Phil doesn't wish to go through two coaching searches.

Looking at this objectively, if UCLA is willing to pay $5 million a year (which looks like it would make Barnes the third-highest paid coach in college basketball) then why wouldn't he take it? His stock is at an all time high right now and next year looks to be a step backward at Tennessee with several key personnel losses.

If Barnes has a desire to try to cement his coaching legacy by trying to turn around a blue blood, or is looking to cash in, this is the move.

I like Coach Barnes...I hope he likes us. I wish someone that was a winner would like us at some point. I guess Majors and Fulmer were the last ones. On another note, as a person coming into my young adult years in the 80's, I wish I had played Football, or Basketball, even if I wasn't good and been a student of the game. Wow, the money that is out there....It's unbelievable. The 80's sucked big time for career choices...Look at Pharmacy, PT, Coaching, computer science, etc. that have become "the" fields since then, but back then, they were nothing..

If you are referring to me I have never once put down Barnes at all.

He is a HOF and the best coach we have ever had by a wide margin.

Anyone who knows basketball knows AU had a better year than us. A Final Four trumps even an undefeated regular season. You are obviously a casual who only watches UTbball if you think we had a better season.

All my Zo stuff has been facts. Dispute them if you can.

I'd trade seasons with Auburn and not think twice about it. Final Four and winning the SECT? Not even close.

Lest we forget:

2018-2019 UT Basketball Team:

1. Did not win the SEC
2. Did not win the SEC tournament
3. Lost in the Sweet 16 (I.E., did not make Elite 8, Final 4 or Championship game)

If he leaves, he leaves. Honor your damn contract and stop interviewing with other teams.
No thanks. I had my share of coaching search dumpster fires the past few seasons . Hate to break it to you but this is Tenn not a Bluebloods in basketball. You guys are unbelievable
