To me, that only matters if you could land Izzo or Wright by paying them $4.7 mil, and I don't think we could. Izzo and Wright are where they want to be, and more often than not, that comes at a discount to the school.

We wouldn’t pay that to start a coach. You pay a premium for stability and for someone who has built your program.

Tom Izzo has been courted by the Cavaliers. Those type guys aren’t leaving their current schools because they have already made a crap load of money. Another million dollars doesn’t sway them. Those names were all pipe dreams.

That’s fine but if we are gonna pay that much money then expectations should be raised. S16’s and no conference tournament titles won’t cut it anymore.

Still think Barnes being the third highest paid coach in college ball ludicrous.

I'm saying that Barnes is responsible for much of what you posted so not paying him and hoping you can bring in some of his caliber or higher is a risk.

I rarely see a coach at highly successful program (Mich St., etc.) decide it's time to go to a non-historic program just for more money.

So, firing Barnes for the hope you could get a top 10 coach seems like a pipe dream. Smart money is keeping him and keeping the momentum going.

I still haven't seen any reason to believe one of those coaches you mentioned would leave their programs to come to a Tennessee if they won't leave to go to a UCLA.

Letting him go would have been a travesty after the momentum we have built. Pay the man and his assistants.

The smart move would have been to let Barnes walk and offer Bruce Pearl 3.2mil a year. He currently makes 2.8mil at Auburn...

Expectations are raised - no doubt. Just playing the odds it makes sense to keep Barnes and I bet it's still a net profit on the program.

The fact that no one will go to UCLA at this point destroys your theory that it is considered a premier position in the coaching industry.

I mispoke, not retaining.

You still haven't provided any objective reason that the big name coaches you've mentioned would leave their jobs to take the UT job let alone take it over the UCLA job.
