Rick Barnes has emerged as a serious candidate the for UCLA job, reportedly has interviewed

He literally told them that no amount of money would convince him to go there. How is that "entertaining offers" from Arkansas?
I mean to say that he didn’t just say no. He had to qualify it by saying he wouldn’t do that to UT. Basically he would be open to it if not for the conference.

If true, he will probably give it strong consideration. I love the job he’s done at Tennessee, but he’ll have a much easier time recruiting 4 and 5 stars there than Knoxville.
GBO!

Wasn't aware he'd been "snatched" yet. Might want to wait for the fire before pulling the alarm?
The fact we are even having to entertain this notion speaks volumes to me, I’m far from panicking. I like Barnes but I’m one of those piece of crap losers who actually viewed this season overall as a pretty big let down so what do I know.

He built the program up with recruits and the fanbase..... It was clear that the program on the court and fanbase were trending upward fast.

But its clear you don't pay attention to sports
2014: 15-20
2015: 11-20
2016: 18-14

Huge upward trend there. 🙄 So much confidence from the outside looking in that he would go 26-8 and 30-10 over the next two years. I guess in 2017, you'd have laid down a hefty sum of money that would happen given the obvious metrics pointing on that direction. You know, since you clearly pay attention to sports and stuff. Our resident forum savant, you are.

Once again, you obviously don't watch much basketball because the amount of season tickets and involvement that was being generated given the recruiting and student involvement was causing that program to trend upward.

Its even more obvious that you don't pay attention when your only response is to use wikipedia to post records.

Why does UT operate like a mid major? I mean we can’t ever lure a really good hire when performing coaching searches in any sport and now we finally luck into one in basketball and the minute he starts having success here he is snatched away? Again I thought that was the life of a mid major program not a power 5, much less a power 5 that is top 10 in money earned pretty much every year.

This is my question.

John Calipari disagrees as did the other coaches they have already approached
Right, because this situations at Kentucky / Tennessee are similar...

And Jamie Dixon was packing his bags to head out there, they just didn't wanna pay the $8 million buyout.

I agree. The last two years have been rare opportunities for UT to make deep runs. If he leaves, I'll still cherish his time here and the teams. Doesn't matter who the coach is next season, we face a rebuild. Gonna need a couple of really good classes to get back to competing for sweet 16s.

Barnes' total assistant salary pool last year was $975K with Lanier making $425K. I know its Kentucky but just for reference, Calipari's Associate HC was making $900K himself. After the football team went 5-7, we upped the salary pools and spent a ton on Ansley/Chaney. Obviously football is the breadwinner for UT sports but if Barnes feels like he can't get an increase on assistants to mirror what he is trying to accomplish then I can't blame him for wanting to go to a blue blood like UCLA where he would have a HUGE budget compared to us and have a shot at a title. Honestly its just business and I see why he would leave.
Why move to that cesspool LA? Barnes doesn't seem like the type that would fit in there. I will be shocked if he leaves unless Fulmer just boggles this whole thing.

Am I the only person with the opinion of the reason why Barnes is interested in moving on from UT may just be due to his relationship with Fulmer? Currie hired Barnes, so obviously Barnes liked Currie personally and professionally.....with Fulmer now in place Barnes simply may not have as good of a relationship with Fulmer personally and/or professionally.

Friend sent this to me.

From Volquest:
Tennessee was expected to see some movement on its basketball staff this offseason, but all of that chatter centered on assistants leaving for head coaching opportunities. Now though, less than two weeks since the Vols’ season ended with a loss to Purdue in the Sweet 16 head coach Rick Barnes could be on the move. The news that Barnes had emerged as a priority candidate in UCLA’s coaching search struck Tennessee fans like a thunderbolt on Sunday night. On the surface it seems like a questionable fit. Barnes has never coached west of Texas where he spent 17 years. He’s a North Carolina native who has seemingly found a great fit in Knoxville with a fan base that appreciates his down home charm and plain spoken manner. He’s worked a borderline miracle in his four years on the job, going from 31 combined wins in his first two years to 57 combined wins and an SEC title in the last two. Digging deeper though you can see why the job may appeal to Barnes. Money could certainly be a part of it, sources have indicated to us that he would start off with a guaranteed salary in the neighborhood of $5 million per year with a bonus structure that could take him to $6 million. That would represent nearly a $2 million raise for Barnes who made $3,250,000 this past season in the first year of a five year deal that was restructured last summer. Additionally, Barnes has a $5 million buyout as part of the extension he signed last summer which sources have indicated to us that UCLA would be willing to pay. Barnes has also made it an open secret that he’d like to increase his assistant coaching salary pool, always something he’s concerned about, and he’d like to see the athletic department offer his assistants multi-year guaranteed deals, something that has become commonplace on the football side on Rocky Top. If Barnes leaves though, I don’t think that money will be the root cause of his decision. He’s a college basketball history buff and as such I could see where the idea that the final chapter of his coaching career would be resurrecting one of the most historically successful programs in the nation would be appealing to him. From a recruiting standpoint it’s hard to find an area of the country that routinely produces more talent than Southern California. UCLA is also a program that has a history of being able to lure one-and-done type talent even when they’ve not been a national power. Barnes’ driving passion at this stage of his career is to win a national championship before he hangs it up. In the final analysis will he feel that’s easier done at UCLA than Knoxville? That could be the driving force behind his decision. This past season’s success would suggest it’s possible. Tennessee won 31 games, spent five weeks ranked No. 1 in the nation and was a controversial last second foul call away from playing Virginia in the Elite Eight. As of lunchtime on Monday it feels like we’re going to get a resolution soon. Sources have suggested to us that Barnes and Fulmer are set to meet again this afternoon, after which I would guess we’ll quickly learn what the head coach is going to do. Just a week ago the thought that Barnes wouldn’t finish his career in Knoxville seemed like an outlandish proposition. As we sit here today though the proposition is very realistic. Is he leaning towards leaving? That’s a tough call but all signs and everything we’re hearing suggests that he is willing to walk and try his hand at restoring UCLA to its former glory as his final act. Will Phillip Fulmer and Tennessee be able to turn the tide here? Obviously Barnes is giving them the chance to keep him or he would have simply informed Fulmer he was leaving this weekend. Instead he’s already met with the athletic director once and will do so again on Monday. After one of the most successful seasons in the history of the program, Tennessee basketball is at a crossroads that no one saw coming. Even for an athletic department that’s been an absolute drama factory in recent years, this has been a next level development.

I literally just spelled out why he would move there. UCLA is a storied program, huge budget and he probably will retire in what ~10 years? Has a shot at running the pac-12 for years. Sidenote; LA isnt a cesspool it has beautiful weather, really cool people, delicious food & for Barnes access to almost every 5* California recruit out there.

EDIT: I hope youre right though, dont want this to be bungled and he leave for no reason
