Wow, long thread....
My read on this situation is all about the sudden arrival and wise use of leverage:
First , I think Rick Barnes is a legit, stand-up person, not a shady self-promoter. I think he truly likes UT and this community. He and UT are a great fit and far better than LA would ever be, and he knows it.
Two, he's already secured his spot in the Hall of Fame. The two National Coach of the Year Awards in 2019 have locked it down short of an unlikely fall from grace in the future.
Three, his leverage will never (at least not likely ever) be stronger at UT than it is now. He is the consensus NCOY. His team was ranked #1 for 5 weeks playing the best bunch of former 3*s in the history of this school (and most others). He made the Sweet Sixteen and likely would have advanced farther but for some dodgy calls. Most everyone who can think loves both him and his team in Knoxville. He is a very popular person who could run for public office and win.
Four, while he represents himself and doesn't use an agent, he isn't a "potted plant" quietly sitting in the corner waiting for handouts. He needs to take care of his business and that includes his salary, his staff and all things UT Basketball.
Five, UCLA's coaching search is a true dumpster fire rivaled only by recent UT coaching search efforts. Alford has been gone forever and every play the Bruins have made to replace him has been a miss---some spectacular. But, UCLA's unexpected, sudden and intense interest in Coach Barnes provides a surprise windfall to him in additional negotiating power.
So, I think he is representing himself and his program with the AD and negotiating for the best deal he can get right now (not necessarily for more personal salary which is obviously going to be increased anyway) while his leverage has been vastly increased by UCLA's sudden interest in him. Phil Fulmer is a good AD and, whether he likes basketball or not, he knows how good, how prominent and how popular our program is right now.
I think Fulmer will do what it takes to keep RB with the Vols.
