Probably so. UCLA is desperate though so they may counter. But it's been said it's not about the money though so maybe a counter would be meaningless. I think this is huge for Phillip. I would think another $1M at the basketball program would be minuscule compared to trying to replace him. JMOImo if we get thru today and he isnt the coach at ucla we survived the scare
When you grow up and enter the world of business and start dealing with job offers and contracts, you'll understand. You keep all options on the table until you complete negotiations.
Look, Barnes is a hired gun. He's being paid to be here. He doesn't "bleed orange". It's business.
So 1/3 of the coaches were failures two were average and two above, we have one of the two above here now, let’s keep him.Okay, but in that time, we only had one, maybe two, who were colossal failures in terms of results. Green wasn't a likeable guy, but his teams, while they may have underachieved relative to their talent, produced on the floor. He wasn't a great coach, just a good recruiter. He landed the majority of those kids he won with, not O'Neill.
Buzz Peterson was a failure. Tyndall remains an unknown in terms of coaching ability. Cuonzo was an enigma, but not quite the failure Peterson was.
I think if we hire the right guy, assuming we even go down that road, we are the most attractive we have been to an incoming coach as we've been in a long time. Certainly much more attractive than we have been at any point in the last 20 years, and truthfully, a lot longer than that. This is really uncharted territory for us. A 31-win, P6 team who didn't lose their coach in shame should attract a decent replacement.
A. His buyout at Auburn is higher than Barnes here
B. His assistants are in trouble at Auburn
His buyout at Auburn is 6 million. Barnes' is 5 million. So a million dollar buyout effectively is small beans.
Second- his assistant, only one, Chuck Person has been charged and convicted of using his position for personal future gain and nothing regarding impermissible benefits to the program. Bruce has been exonerated of anything to do with Person at Auburn. The FBI was investigating Person for those issues and that investigation had zero to do with the ongoing pay to play investigation that has consumed the likes of Arizona, Will Wade, Louisville, and other schools.
So your points really make sense as to why he would for sure NOT get a look.
2 of his assistants are in hot water with the FBI case.
You are omitting the fact that aside from Person, Pearl has had to place another assistant coach, Ira Bowman, on administrative leave due to his involvement with the bribery case in Pennsylvania. His buyout at Auburn is 6 million. Trouble follows the guy, or at least finds him wherever he is. That should be a red flag for a school that, right or wrong, has already felt compelled to fire him once, already.
