Rick Barnes has emerged as a serious candidate the for UCLA job, reportedly has interviewed

Okay, but in that time, we only had one, maybe two, who were colossal failures in terms of results. Green wasn't a likeable guy, but his teams, while they may have underachieved relative to their talent, produced on the floor. He wasn't a great coach, just a good recruiter. He landed the majority of those kids he won with, not O'Neill.

Buzz Peterson was a failure. Tyndall remains an unknown in terms of coaching ability. Cuonzo was an enigma, but not quite the failure Peterson was.

I think if we hire the right guy, assuming we even go down that road, we are the most attractive we have been to an incoming coach as we've been in a long time. Certainly much more attractive than we have been at any point in the last 20 years, and truthfully, a lot longer than that. This is really uncharted territory for us. A 31-win, P6 team who didn't lose their coach in shame should attract a decent replacement.

Barnes' total assistant salary pool last year was $975K with Lanier making $425K. I know its Kentucky but just for reference, Calipari's Associate HC was making $900K himself. After the football team went 5-7, we upped the salary pools and spent a ton on Ansley/Chaney. Obviously football is the breadwinner for UT sports but if Barnes feels like he can't get an increase on assistants to mirror what he is trying to accomplish then I can't blame him for wanting to go to a blue blood like UCLA where he would have a HUGE budget compared to us and have a shot at a title. Honestly its just business and I see why he would leave.

Imo if we get thru today and he isnt the coach at ucla we survived the scare
Probably so. UCLA is desperate though so they may counter. But it's been said it's not about the money though so maybe a counter would be meaningless. I think this is huge for Phillip. I would think another $1M at the basketball program would be minuscule compared to trying to replace him. JMO

When you grow up and enter the world of business and start dealing with job offers and contracts, you'll understand. You keep all options on the table until you complete negotiations.

Look, Barnes is a hired gun. He's being paid to be here. He doesn't "bleed orange". It's business.

And Barnes has all of the leverage

So 1/3 of the coaches were failures two were average and two above, we have one of the two above here now, let’s keep him.

Once again, what facts or intel do you have that guarantees what will happen with the search if Barnes does leave? Amazing you know everything that will and won't happen.
A. His buyout at Auburn is higher than Barnes here
B. His assistants are in trouble at Auburn

His buyout at Auburn is 6 million. Barnes' is 5 million. So a million dollar buyout effectively is small beans.

Second- his assistant, only one, Chuck Person has been charged and convicted of using his position for personal future gain and nothing regarding impermissible benefits to the program. Bruce has been exonerated of anything to do with Person at Auburn. The FBI was investigating Person for those issues and that investigation had zero to do with the ongoing pay to play investigation that has consumed the likes of Arizona, Will Wade, Louisville, and other schools.

So your points really make sense as to why he would for sure NOT get a look.

Back to the subject at hand, it appears that Barnes is not only flirting but is also leaking and making sure it's all out there. Not a good look IMO. I'm very disappointed. If he's that unhappy with Fulmer's level of priority on men's BB, it shouldn't be coming out this way.

2 of his assistants are in hot water with the FBI case.

I'm wondering if Barnes decision is the reason Williams has been so quite about his decision for next year?
I'm really surprised Lanier bolted so quickly.

How in the world would you know this?

Barnes doesn’t have an agent. Tennessee wouldn’t want this to get out. Not sure what this does for UCLA to leak it, not like Barnes is a home run for them. Somebody is leaking it.

Chuck Person's issues showed no involvement with Bruce.

Ira Bowman's issues are from his time at Penn where Bruce wasn't even remotely close to or had any involvement.

That's like saying Auburn is hot water because of something Bruce did at Tennessee.....

You are omitting the fact that aside from Person, Pearl has had to place another assistant coach, Ira Bowman, on administrative leave due to his involvement with the bribery case in Pennsylvania.

Trouble follows the guy, or at least finds him wherever he is. That should be a red flag for a school that, right or wrong, has already felt compelled to fire him once, already.

Nah man it’s all a coincidence he’s been in some sort of scandal most of his career. From the 90’s to Tennessee to Auburn. Just unfortunate luck. Pearl is just too trusting.

So Bruce is somehow in trouble for hiring a guy who had issues at a previous job? Wow! Shocking! Breaking News!

Bruce was exonerated of any misdeeds during the Person case.

Saying he is in hot water because of something in Bowman's past is purely asinine....

But hey, anything to knock Pearl right?
