True. Read this in a USA Today article, if true that's the major thing to keep in mind. (see bold)

No, NFL teams didn’t exactly bid themselves crazy in an auction for the services of the best player at the position that typically has the shortest shelf life in football.

The multi-dimensional star joins the New York Jets with a four-year contract worth $52.5 million, according to multiple reports. The average salary of $13.125 million ranks second among running backs after the $57.5 million package ($14.375 million average) that the Los Angeles Rams' Todd Gurley struck last summer. And it will surely rank third after Ezekiel Elliott re-ups with the Dallas Cowboys.

Yet, assuming the reports of $35 million in guarantees are accurate, Bell got the security that saves face after he refused to accept the $14.54 million franchise tag salary in 2018 from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Reports were that the Steelers' offer was $33 million guaranteed in the first two years with $45 million in the first three. There was no guarantee for years 4 and 5 on their offer. He got $35 million guaranteed from the Jets. You also have to remember that he lost an entire year of income last year. The way I understand it, his offer from the Steelers would have pocketed him more money regardless.

Edit: I have read multiple articles, and the numbers and analysis are all over the board. There is an article from this past October that says that it appears Bell was guaranteed at least $20 million to be on the roster in year one.

Le'Veon Bell grew up a Steelers fan and said on numerous occasions that he wanted to remain with the black and gold for the entirety of his career. Bell had that chance in 2017 but decided to turn down Pittsburgh's reported longterm offer that would have paid him $13.3 million per season. Bell then posted the following message on Twitter before skipping the entire 2018 season instead of playing under a franchise tag that would have paid him $14.5 million.

Late Tuesday night, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Bell is set to sign a four-year, $52.5 million deal with the Jets that includes a $35 million guaranteed and a max value of $61 million. To recap: Bell turned down a five-year deal from a team coming off a 13-3 season that would have paid him $14 million annually while also giving him $33 million up front. Instead, Bell sat out an entire year, throwing away $14.5 million and also wasting a precious year of his prime while playing a role in Pittsburgh's disappointing 2018 season. For what? To sign a less lucrative contract with a team coming off a 4-12 season. A team that plays in the same division as the Tom Brady/Bill Belichick - led New England Patriots. Good luck with that, Le'Veon.

It appears Jets gave him more in guaranteed than his long term offer from the Steelers before 2018, but had he signed the deal in 2018 he would have likely made more money over the life of the contract, assuming he made it the full 5 years. Who knows, I feel like he wanted out of there...2017 he got an offer, 2018 he got an offer, refused to play under the franchise tag then I don't think Pittsburgh tried to match anything this off season and let him go.

Maybe it was the principle of the situation. There were a lot of things said during the year by fans AND teammates. Like you said, maybe he just wanted out of Pittsburgh. It is not always about money. People question why a recruit would come to TN when we play UGA, FL, and Bama every year.

This is accurate.

Also, he’s going from arguably the best OL unit in the NFL to a bottom 5 unit.

There is a reason he was fired. That’s an awful take. Not to mention if he would’ve played under the tag AGAIN in 2018 and had a significant injury, he would be getting a fraction of the money he was offered by the Steelers or signed for by the jets.

Him and Clay Travis are both showing their ass on that major which isn’t surprising from either.
