'19 TN ILB Christopher Russell (Texas A&M signee)

It's funny how several guys in here wanted this kid, and now it's like oh well, we didnt want him anyway. We haven't even won the east in over 10 years, and during some of these times the east has been the worst it's been in a long time. Let's just hope Pruitt and his staff can coach kids up, or he will continue to get owned on the trail by Kirby, Saban, jimbo, etc.
See what I was saying earlier? That guy. Unfortunately, VN has countless, that guy.

I was meaning once he got the Texas offer
either way.

he never considered leaving the state until late November/December, when the big boys started to roll in offers, cause we all needed back up lans for LB"s we didn't get or might not get.

and presenting it as if to say we missed or that maybe he just "decided to leave the state" is not remotely close to the truth.

he was smart for not signing with Memphis during the ESP. he's parlayed it in to what will be a football scholarship to an SEC school. kudos to him....

I think what he is saying and what most of us realize is that the staff is whiffing on a lot of recruits that they had counted on and passed on other recruits for. Too many IMO and it is concerning. When a coach preaches all year that we don't have the horses and then doesn't get the horses the want, there is cause for concern. It doesn't mean you aren't a true fan, just because you are a realist. Vol fans can have an assessment that isn't always 100% sunshine without being wrong.
I think the verbiage “completely whiffed” leaves little room for interpretation. Some huge wins in this class. Best OL class in recent memory in addition to a signee considered the top game changer in this year’s class as recently as the beginning of the year. “Concerns” is a reasonable talking point...”completely whiffed” is a greedy stabbing of a narrative.

Look, I would like to have Russell in this class. I think he's a good kid and could turn into a very solid LB. I've been on record in here before saying I like him and want him to be part of this class. But I'm not going to do any hand-wringing like some folks are if he isn't part of this class.

The staff valued more highly-rated, ready to play players first. Big deal. That's what they're supposed to do.

Russell likely isn't contributing outside of special teams in his first two years on campus. The guys they were valuing over him (Trezmen Marshall, To'oto'o, Pappoe) are guys who can come in and actually play on defense immediately. Russell isn't. So heaven forbid the staff go after the guys who have more instant impact ability over a player who has a lot of upside but probably won't realize it for another couple years.

Russell has a good chance to be a good player. But he's not ready to contribute significantly right now. I would still like him to be in this class, but the whole narrative of UT "slow playing him" is just false, IMO. And if it's true, then they aren't the only ones who did it. Texas A&M did too if you're looking at it like that, yet he's supposedly favoring them now?

You can't have it both ways.

Sums up my thoughts exactly. The drive-by posters acting like we just "passed" on the next Ray Lewis is the crazy part.
