'19 TN ILB Christopher Russell (Texas A&M signee)

Missing on in-state kids because we thought we could do better isn’t a good look though.

sooooooo whats the plan then? in state kid that is rated a 4* we take no matter what? as soon as they want to commit, we say yes?

there's no perfect scenario here. if the kid is good enough, and we want him, we'll take him. if not, we're going to look for the best players possible.

we won't get them all. and sometimes that means when we circle back around, they've found other homes.

sometimes we get who we want though.

this monday morning qb'ing the in state prospects is old.

if they were soooo good, they'd of already had committable offers from us....and a lo to of other schools.

the early singing period helps kids like this in some cases, as it gives them more options, late. chris russell wasn't on ANYONE's radar until after the ESD really. and now all the sudden he's a "gotta have him" prospect?

please.

Williams is committed to Minnesota.......has been for a minute.....MINNESOTA...not exactly who our bar is set against is it? and now, we suck cause we're "passing" on all this in state talent?

lol.

some of y'all are funny.

Funny how these type of posters only show up when there's negative news.

People are refusing to admit that the staff might have completely screwed this up. I think they've done a pretty good job with this class, but this stuff is worrisome.

The staff prioritized HT, Eboigbe, Marshall, Clemons, Henry over Joseph Anderson and Chris Russell. Then they proceeded to lose all of them.

They absolutely deserve credit for landing Crouch and nailing the evaluation of the other OLB who I can't remember now.

Roman Harrison (other OLB you can’t remember now)

Harrison.

Pruitt has alredy addressed the issue of closing. he said it in his press conference on ESD, that closing has to get better.

so i don't think anyone should argue that.

it's the notion that we "passed" on these kids...yeah, we did because we were going after those top shelf guys. which we should.

my question is, if "losing" the in state talent so many apparently covet is so detrimental to our program, does that mean we should employe a completely different strategy? i mean, do you want Eboigbe enough to try or do you take Williams committment in March and "let's ride"?

it's the risk you run when you recruit. you can't take everyone and you're at the mercy of an 18 year old. and you're competing against the best programs in the country.

it's monday morning qb'ing at it's finest, and again, if Williams or Russell were THAT good, they'd of had more suitors earlier in the process. the demand for them right now is purely supply/demand related. and that may wind up hurting us in the end.

so be it. i'd rather keep going after Justin Eboigbe's and Kris Bogle's and Crouch's, and Keyton's, and Morris's and Wright's........................and if htey happen to be in state guys....GREAT.

You're entitled to an opinion, but most who have followed recruiting would disagree. You're getting bent out of shape over a LB who was committed to Memphis not that long ago, and only on the radar of one bottom-tier SEC school (Arkansas). It appears the staff did try to get back on Anderson, but it's not like he was being heavily pursued by the top SEC programs.

The staff prioritized HT, Eboigbe, Marshall, Clemons, Henry over Joseph Anderson and Chris Russell. Then they proceeded to lose all of them.

So this staff shouldn't take a swing at some of the top prospects in the nation, and rather settle for a 3* LB (that was committed to Memphis at the time), and a kid that ended up at USCjr? Is that really what you're arguing?

This staff understands that this program is sorely lacking SEC-level talent, and is taking swings on game-changing prospects. Sometimes, you lose (Henry T, Eboigbe, etc.); sometimes you win (Crouch, Wright, etc.). This staff gets paid a lot of coin to make those decisions.

Roman Harrison...as if you didn’t know. 😎
It’s worrisome that you’re determined to be worried. In this forum we call it RECRUITING.

I think what he is saying and what most of us realize is that the staff is whiffing on a lot of recruits that they had counted on and passed on other recruits for. Too many IMO and it is concerning. When a coach preaches all year that we don't have the horses and then doesn't get the horses the want, there is cause for concern. It doesn't mean you aren't a true fan, just because you are a realist. Vol fans can have an assessment that isn't always 100% sunshine without being wrong.

If the staff didn't prioritize TooToo or Eboigbe over the 24th best player in state that is barely in the top 900! nationally I would be more worried. If you don't swing for the fences you settle for dribblers. You ask me at any point in time ever if I will take a 40 percent chance at landing a HT over taking a Chris Russell and having 0 shot at HT. 100 times over yes I will. This fascination that people have with in state prospects is insane, like it has been said if Russell was from North Dakota with the same ranking he has now these same people would complain about us wasting a scholarship on him.

Don't get me wrong if he wants to be here cool welcome aboard bud, but I'm not losing sleep over the fact we aimed high instead of settling low.

You're not too hip to this "recruiting" thing, are you? You recruit the best players at each position, and go down your board if you miss on your top targets. Some kids you slow play don't like it and choose other schools; sometimes they sign with your school.

You seem to be an adherent of the Butch Jones Method of Recruiting: take the commitments of way too many middling prospects in June, then hope to "trade up" by the time February (or December) rolls around. Most often you get stuck with too many kids that you should have taken in late December/early February after you missed on your top targets.

It doesn't mean you aren't a true fan, just because you are a realist. Vol fans can have an assessment that isn't always 100% sunshine without being wrong.

Ah, there it is--the old "but I'm a realist" canard. No one's questioning your fandom. The only reality is that anyone--be it a sunshine pumper or LOM member--can have a laughably bad opinion.
