On two occasions when our QB and Offense looked inept , Chryst came in and produced immediate scoring drives. I defended JG against all the naysayers up to the Alabama game and then stopped supporting him because at that time I determined IMO he was not SEC caliber as to pocket presence. I stand by that opinion. Does that make you feel better that I used the word "opinion".
I went back and checked your posting history. I saw where you stated that with Chryst playing we probably would have won more games. I saw where you said post Bama that it was obvious Chryst was better.
Prior to that, I saw you say that offensive play calling and a bad o-line was hindering JG.
So why the flip? Do you realize that right before JG got hurt against Bama, he hit a 30 yard pass to get Tennessee into scoring position? Chryst came in and cleaned it up, but up to that drive Tennessee had put up a net of five yards.
The entire offense was putrid to start that game, for whatever reason. Running backs had nowhere to go, JG had been sacked 3 times, and he started 2-6.
Then the offense finally started to move the ball, but with penalties and other mistakes. Guarantano then went 3-5 for 51 yards and got Tennessee into scoring position with throws of 20, 11 yards and 30 yards, meaning the down field throw has been discovered as an exploit for Ty Helton. Chryst comes in with play calls down field.
Chryst later goes on to complete passes of 23, 40 and 20 yards for another score. Again, playcalling looked down field. Chryst came in when the offense was finally moving. He wasn't the cause of that, as he took his first snap around Alabama's 35 yard line.
So, to recap, Guarantano started 2-6. Then he went 3-5 for 51 yards, which is 17 yards per reception.
Chryst came in and went 5-7 for 119 the rest of the half, which is about 24 yards per reception. Are you sensing a pattern here? We started 2-6 for single digit yardage before going 8-12 the rest of the half for 170 yards. Downfield was open, and by the time we went that direction, we were already down 28-0.
In the second half, Chryst was 4-8 for 45 yards, because Alabama made halftime adjustments.
You base your ENTIRE opinion of JG on the Alabama game without realizing Chryst was a beneficiary of in game adjustments to playcalling.
