Pruitt talks offensive struggles

Did anyone catch CJP's halftime interview where he talked about the offensive penalties and said either they can be coached up or replaced? I wanted to get people's opinions on those comments. Myself, I like the straightforward approach versus the previous regime.

CJP says the running game has been non-existent and sounds like it will not be a presence the final three games.

Pruitt discusses offensive struggles

When the defense doesn't have to worry about the pass they can play up and stop the run. And our passing game at this point consist of screens and 5 yard passes .. and yes tonight one hell mary that looked like a punt and was thrown into triple coverage.. just lucky the closest defender fell down. But we did get a player injured on the play or 2 if you count JG getting slammed again.

I would do 1 of 2 things:
1. Drop it and just pass the ball 80% of the time.
2. Tell the players no matter what the score is, we're not going to throw the ball even once until they can effectively run it.

Not hard given how psychical our receivers are. Roll the pocket!

It's tempting to go with #1 but I don't know if we can protect well enough to keep a QB healthy if we throw it that much.

Yet they still chose to keep trying. Makes sense.

I agree ... if we don't have a running game and JG has such great stats then why run the ball at all. But then they claim we can't throw the ball unless we can run the ball. Maybe we can't run the ball because our passing game isn't a threat. With JG at QB all they got to do is put 5 on the line to stop the run and put JG on the ground.

You clearly see only what you want to see. We have been throwing the ball down the field more and more each game. We had a long touchdown tonight again. And as far as triple coverage on that pass play you don’t know what you’re talking about but it fits your narrative best. When he threw the ball it was one on one and the defender fell down making Palmer wide open. JG was hit as he threw it and it stayed in the air for 4 seconds they said. That allowed other defenders to get there.

If there’s one thing we know, it’s that this staff isn’t going to abandon the run no matter what.
You’re correct. Facing the 85 Bears, they’re gonna go run, run, pass no matter what. And the run, run will be up the middle for a loss but we’ll keep calling it every series on the chance that the “Fridge” falls down and we gain 3-5

It's completely insane the disparity between our skill players and the O-line. I think we have one of the best "big 3" group of WRs in the SEC. Our RBs are great. JG is very good. But the O-line is worst in the conference. You replace our O-line with Georgia's or even Missouri's, and we're competing for the SEC East; or at least making a pretty good bowl game.

JG had 21 attempts tonight. He had 39 against SC.

The 1 long touchdown is the only one we had offensively, but you keep trying your hardest to sell JG as our QB of the future.

Did anyone catch the post game presser? Pruitt said anybody can beat anybody and “I was actually a part of a coaching staff that lost to....never mind, I probably shouldn’t say it bc I don’t want to disrespect them.”

Who was he talking about?

Probably Louisiana Lafayette at Alabama.

I think some folks are waiting on Will Friend to take the mic and say hey this line has hit its ceiling and it’s not going to get better until we get some reinforcements on the roster, just to validate what everyone pretty much knows anyway at this point. We don’t have the depth yet to lose Brandon Kennedy and then Trey Smith, and playing Smith out of position in the first place tells you all you need to know about where we are in developing a line. When you’re talking about disguising things, that’s as close as you’re going to get to saying you have weaknesses that your roster just doesn’t have answers for. Maybe I’m wrong and our line has been capable of blocking for a power running scheme all along and Friend just isn’t coaching them up. My money’s on we need several hundred more pounds of just plain ill-tempered disposition on the line.

Meh. No energy and half effort is subjective. I haven’t seen that much this year.

But listening to the post game interviews it sounds like we may have been looking ahead to Kentucky, which falls on the staff to a large degree. Although I heard Pruitt hammering all week about how this would be a tough game.

Sometimes the kids ....and they are kids ....just don’t listen

He’ll, wouldn’t you be too if you inherited this group? You can’t change a mindset and culture in less than a year on the job. He’s got to get some croots.. and next year will be a time to start judging I think
Fast forward one year. What is the fan response if he is in the same mood after game 9 in 2019? People are assuming guys will be starting on the o-line who haven't signed yet.

Emotionally flat after last week and uninspired.
Don’t know how you overcome kids that are used to finding ways to lose. Especially when it just happened again last week

Just pause a minute and think about this... we have an O-line that cannot block squat. How is that even possible after all the hours of film study, weight room, and coaching on and off the field. To see a guy whiff on a rusher over and over... he just looked completely lazy. You have to ask why is he getting playing time. It is getting to be a joke... some of the players effort is beyond embarrassing. I really do feel for Pruitt.... and think less and less of Butchie for the mess he left.

Now I understand why no decent coach wants to come here. Tennessee has dug itself in a whole that it can not get out of. Our best bet is to stick with Pruitt no matter how long it takes. I.E. Clemson with Dabo. Stoops with UK. Gonna take a while to get back to being competitive in the SEC
