I know a lot of folks have been down on Helton's play calling so far this season, particularly with all of the first down run calls, however, I think big picture it is the type of style that will really help us win ball games once we have the horses to do it properly.
The philosophy is relatively simple: We want to bulldoze you up front, keep the clock running to shorten the game, and wear down your defense. And when you're tired, and we've lulled you to sleep with our grinding between the tackles run game, we are going to take a deep shot over the top for a big chunk of yardage.
This isn't sexy football. It isn't flashy. But it does two things that are key to winning: (1) It substantially reduces the risk of turnovers and (2) If run properly, it keeps your own defense rested on the sideline.
The problem with this offense right now is we don't currently have the personnel to run it optimally. We need big road graders up front, big bruising tight ends, and backs that are built to run down hill with aggression. But look at what we're recruiting: two Tight Ends that are both 6'5" and weigh over 240. They'll likely be at 260 by the time they see the field. The four OL that we currently have committed are all big burly 290+ pounders coming out of HS that all have the frames to add even more weight. Wanya Morris is 6'5" 320 already. If we add Darnell Wright, he's 6'6" 330.
Tennessee is soon going to be a team that has size and power again. The kind of team that is feared when seen getting off the bus. That is what is needed to run this offense most effectively.
