Allows the defense to know who the eligible receivers are on any given play.
Whoever said a few pages back that you think Helton is being forced or has decided to call plays with an emphasis on culture change over actual effectiveness is spot on IMO.
Pruitt running on 4th and 1 umpteen times is setting a clear and loud statement to the team and SEC that we are going to play grown man football until we grow up or get new men.
I am going to confess I cringe every time but it is growing on me.
Same with the on sides kicks. I liked the one against AU most of all.
It happened after every Coach we've hired--Kiffin, Dooley, Jones. It's just part of the message board process.
We are a bad side of mediocre team to this point that has been completely blown off the field against the three best of the four decent to good teams we have played..yes we are getting a little better, but we are still blowing executions all over the field. The top team isn't the only one that matters, the lower team does too. Alabama is the best team but Tennessee is absolutely not the worst. One SEC team beating another will never, ever rank over say itf like...ETSU rolled in here and beat Alabama. Its a super obvious difference in skill gap between us and ETSU.
and i'll tell you that i believe the play calling in general is about development. i don't think a guy like Helton, with the obvious background he has, simply trashed his pedigree and now that he's got his big shot as a play caller curled up and has no idea how to scheme a passing game anymore. i think it's a lot more about personnel, and identity.
and while i don't have any realy expectation for this weekend, and expect pretty much more of the same SAturday, i am interested to see what, if anything, changes in route combos, progressions, and play calls in general against the compeition we'll face in November. not discounting any of those teams, but none of them are GA, Bama, Auburn or FL type front 7's. KY's is the closest, and it's no slouch. but i think athletically, we should see some match ups that are a little more even, than some of those others mentioned above.
so just stay healthy this weekend....and go win a couple games in November, against someone not named UNCC, and let's go to a freakin' bowl.
I think Pruitt wants to have a program that can win even when they don't have a very good QB to depend on. If you depend on the passing game to win consistently, you better have one of the best QBs year in and year out.Like you I'm very concerned about the play calling but I don't know who is to blame. Running the ball on 1st and second down every series is not something that he's ever done before. At USC and WKU they threw the ball all over the field. So I really don't know what to think here. Some have said that this is set plane to establish what they want to do so that, even though it isn't working right now, they are instilling that physical culture that will be important for next year. I don't know. But if we want to go bowling, we cannot be so predictable on first and second down and rely on 3rd and 8 completions every series. That won't work. I'm still concerned about the play calling, but it was better Saturday than it has been all year so maybe they're figuring something out over there. One thing is for sure, if Helton turns out to be a not so great play caller, he is a dang good QB coach. He has worked wonders with JG this season.
AgreedProbably not, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he didn't take a look at last year's offense and decide the best thing to do would be to 'shorten' the game by running the ball all the dang time. Given how ineffective our running game has been, though, I'm not sure running the ball as much as we have has down anything to shorten the game. It'll be interesting to see what he does now that he knows he's got a QB and WRs who can make big plays but I'm not sure we'll get to see that until after the BAMA game.
