Helton may eventually turn out but given how green Pruitt is and what his strength is, Helton was the biggest gamble on the staff IMO.

as far as offensive philosophy, i don't thing that should get confused with having your own offensive concepts. two different things. pruitt wants to be physical in the run game, multiple in the passing game, and be able to find and take advantage of match ups. you can do those things a variety of ways. i don't think he's pigeon holed himself in to anything by stating those as goals for the offense.

none of that means that you, as the head coach, wouldn't intervene if you don't think things are going the way you want/expect them to, or if you think you can help them find ways to work thru or around some issues. and if you do, that certainly doesn't autmoatically equate to micro managing or hijacking the offense.

Good post. You make good sense of nuances that may well be true. Fwiw, I was never commenting on any recent "intervening". I'm not sure any such thing has happened recently, but over the course of the whole season. If any recent intervening has lead to his philosophical desires taking less precedence, I'm all for it.

Maybe because he's the head coach.... and maybe because he doesn't have the depth or the horse on D to throw the ball all over the place and force his D to play 90 plays per game?

I'm just suggesting some things you don't seem to have thought of. I don't know whether Pruitt will get it right or not. I do know that to win the SEC or even the East you have to run the ball. You might also want to consider that UF and UGA have decent D's. Miss St who was expected to have a very good run game didn't do much better than UT vs UF.


But to answer your main point, the HC's job is to make sure the parts fit together. Your offensive and defensive game plans have to compliment each other and form a single game strategy. Pruitt may not be good at doing that. He may fail. If he does then I don't think he should get any more than 3 years. No one should. But you are complaining about something that EVERY HC does. Saban interjects himself into the O... Meyer into the D... Smart into the O. Mullens definitely involves himself in the D. All good coaches are able to pull all 3 elements of the game together.

well just keep in mind, we're talking about calling the play.

not wether or not the play is successful.

our perceived run, run, pass punt issue could turn in to pass, pass, pass punt, really darn quick....and no time gets taken off the clock, and you extend the game, and the defense gets gassed and the 4th qtr is a free for all for the opponent running thru our defnese like poop thru a goose, and then....we all wonder why pruitt's defense sucks out loud.

we're just not a very good football team right now. i hope they are working some little things that can help on 1st downs, so we have more opportunities to stay on the field and stress a defense out some, while protecting ours...
edit...and maybe score some points along way too......

i do think we need to do more on early downs. don't have to fling it around like a mike leach offense. but i think we started to see more of what pruitt wanted against UGA. get some more completions, and some better execution up front, maybe we can have some drives like we did in the 2nd qtr of the WVU game.

i still think if you go back to that drive in that game, that's what htey want this offense to look like, in general.

Kiffen used to pass a lot, on a really good team, despite what Saban told him to do. Now he’s coaching at a school he never heard of until he was told to find a new job. Pruitt = HC. Helton = OC. Pruitt > Helton.

It’s just the way the world works.

You are brain dead. What position did you play? I was a guard, so I never saw what was going on behind me, but I can assure you that Pruitt knows what he is doing.

I haven't slogged through the entire 6+ pages of this thread so someone likely has had the same thought.

The running game eats up more time than the passing game. Therefore, the defense stays fresher the entire game. CJP's game is defense. He has to make a decent show of it. I'll not try to guess whether a more open offense would give a better chance of winning. That speculation is for those that have much more knowledge of the game. Just a random thought.

Hell you would probably complain if it was 2:1 pass plays to run. "You win in the SEC by running the ball not this air attack crap"

I don't really care who is running the offense whether it's CJP, CTH, Fulmer, Friend, or whomever. From a purely objective standpoint it's not working and it needs to be fixed. I'm tired of everyone talking about the lack of skill our players have or the mess Butch left us. You can't control what we have. It is what it is. Outside of Saban and perhaps a few other coaches all teams have a few weaknesses and have to be flexible and creative with what they have. I'm not expecting TN to set the world on fire and score 50+ points per game but 13-14 points per game isn't going to cut it. Where's the creativity and adaptability? I admire those great offensive coaches who can take their lemons and turn them into lemonade (hate to beat a dead horse, but look how Florida's new coach has adapted to the hand he has been dealt (clearly not the hand he prefers) . It is clear that the previous regime tried to force only one offensive scheme down our throats and as much as I like the new staff (better) I still see that we are trying to ram one offensive philosophy down the players throats. I don't care if CJP hires Santa Claus as an offensive consultant as long as they start adapting to the players they have. The overall output of the offense is CJPs responsibility and if it isn't working, he is responsible for fixing it.

I keep expecting at some point for the offense to have some kind of resurgence like they did the 2009 year with Kiffin. May never happen with our personnel, but I must say I was equally unoptimistic then going into that years Georgia game. I know it’s totally different situations, but it seemed like after that game we had some identity and had shown great signs of improvement. At some point either this year or next I think our offense has to gel some and have some success or we’ll be back at this same spot in 2 years. I am still remaining cautiously optimistic that at some point the light will come on for this offense.
