Pruitt must prove it

When did he call out the play calling? I must have missed that.
For the public, on his show.
He's not shy, so I'm sure it's a little more stern in the coaches meeting. Paraphrasing or maybe have it exact
Last week: "surely we have more plays other than than a run on every first down".
This week: "I'm not a fan of the negative 2 yard passing plays".

At first, I questioned him saying anything in public. But I've learned that he always says "we" and follows it by calling himself out on a defensive series.

Pruitt has confidence in himself and his staff. He does not care about the public perception of him as much as he cares about creating the correct culture and implemting his systems. Wins will bring back the public perception in a heartbeat.

Pruitt knows we will loose games to ranked teams. He is playing the players that he sees in those positions in the future.

He threw the WVA game for experience, and it was the right call. Are we running the ball to much, not if your learning how to block. Are we going for it on 4th to much, not if your sending the message, we play to win. BTW, going for two in the Ga game was the correct call.

Helton may not be a bad OC, he may be getting reps for the line that are desperately needed. We all want to beat GA but really what were the chances. Get ready for more of the same. If it works perhaps we win later in the year.

Helton is keeping the O vanilla until we learn to execute vanilla. The oline needs vanilla most, but so do our backs, TE, and receivers. Helton is probably frustrated he is forced to keep it simple.

We don’t have the receivers or line to beat the best teams deep. We can beat the Sc, Ky, Vandy etc. deep. We will be working the deep passing soon in prep.

I see improvement in our defense but we still have a long way to go. The pass rush has improved. Tackling and toughness need to improve. We still have some busted assignments. We are getting more players to the ball. We are now trying to get turnovers. We should have had 4 In the last game. The D will be ready for the last 4 games of the season.

LBs are better than last year but tackling has to improve. Still missing tackles one on one and in space. Hurting our tackles for loss. Reads are improving but could be better.

The oline has. Improved but not by enough and progress has been slow. We are not strong enough, but the mental errors are our real problem. The only fix is reps, reps, reps, until the light comes on. You can’t coach in experience much. It is time we begin to see significant improvement in the line but it will be hard to see aginst the next few teams we play. If we notice any improvement consider it significant.

Our QB is way better than last year. He is getting to much pressure to be able to read the D and get through the progression. Good news is he is adjusting to the situation, not panicking and is not holding the ball like he was. The negative QB plays were reduced in the GA game.

Looks like a pecking order has been established for the RBs. This means more reps for the top 3. We have backs with potential but lack of experience causes busts in pass protection. Are backs could be picking better places to run. I see fewer busts and better ball security coming.

For now we have to make a living in the short passing game. Receivers have to catch it. Calloway and Jennings are doing fine, the others need work. We have a TE that can catch but can’t block. Separation will remain an issues until we have success deep.

Pruitt may not be the guy taking us to the promised land, but he is a good coach. Better than the last few. His staff is solid and it shows, just not as much as we want. We had to get worse to get better. I also have confidence in Helton for the time being. Let’s see what he does after we learn vanilla.

Don’t get excited by the alignment and fumbles. Those get fixed easily.

The kicking game is not that important at this point. Working on it eats practice time better spent elsewhere for now. I hate the new kickoff rules.

If I am Pruitt I don’t wast much time prepping for the next few games and work on vanilla (us). No scheme or tricks are going to beat the next few teams.

Pruitt, Taggart, Frost...all proven coaches....are all struggling in their 1st season. Saban struggled in his 1st season at Bama. Until these coaches get players that fit their scheme, that’s how it will be.
Pruitt isnt a proven head coach. Taggart has a losing record as a head coach. Not sure whats going on with frost in Nebraska dont ever watch them to know. Saban didnt really struggle in his first year. He had one bad lose. They were expected to be bad, opened the season beating a ranked team, beat several ranked teams that year, beat tennessee very bad, and didnt lose a game by more than I score I think.

I said “proven coaches”. Not HCs. Pruitt has coached some of the best defenses in the country at three different schools with an NC. Taggart made doormat WKU respectable and USF a contender, and we all know what Frost did. Since you want to be self important, Tom Herman’s first year at Texas was a struggle as well. How long did it take Dabo to get cranked up? Spurrier at USC jr., Muschamp. Stoops at UK. My point is very clear. It’s not going to happen overnight.

Heck yes, good points all around.

Herman was 7-6 in his first year at texas...

Self important...lol

What do any of those coaches have to do with ut or are you just trying to be self important? Im thought on pruitt has been consistent, he has 3 years regardless. If after 3 years ee havent seen a turn around the back door interest conversation to gauge interest should start and after 4 year if we dont see major improvement he should be gone. That major improvement doesnt necessarily come in the form of wins and losses but rather fielding a competative team.
I know disagreement with me so you can join the popularity contest is the hip thing to do and all but my view is perfectly reasonable.
The rest of my post on here are to talk about the current state and thus far, until the uga game looked like an unorganized mess. Its not my fault that any criticism of the team leads to the assumption you want the coach fired, so go bark up another tree.

Sounds like the Head Coordinator isn't keeping tabs on his Assistant Coordinators.

CJP says they had a good practice, they did this, they did that, pretty much positives flyin around. Then the game day comes and nothing looks good. There’s a disconnect somewhere, I’m not sure if it’s communication of assistant coaches, players attitudes and non coachable players, how they coach, the terminology they choose, or what...I’m not sure anyone knows yet.

The book on CJP as UT HC is being written. I am not a blind devotee because of his DC prowess. A HC has to do more than simply coach Xs and Os. This season will be extremely challenging. I predicted us to finish 4-8. For me to buy in fully on CJP i want to see, at minimum, a team 1. prepared, 2. enthusiastic, and 3. improving.

I have been critical of what I've seen in games 1-4. No need to rehash it here. Even though watching UGA handle us with relative ease is always painful, I believe there was improvement.

Where did you see improvement?
Where are we still sucking wind?
Any of you who are in "wait and see" mode, does the improvement move CJP up a rung on the ladder of buy in for you?

The FACT that we could not get anyone to take the job due to the administration officers at UT weighs heavily on what CJP must prove or not prove. He has a 20 million dollar contract with a huge buy out so fans beating their chests about what he must do seem like the 2 fleas arguing about who owns the dog.

Pruitt has to stay committed to the scheme. Every week, every day in practice and every rep is building muscle memory and continuity with the guys. What feels like is not working in week 5, against sometimes superior athletes start kicking in as the season progresses against teams more equal. In time, players instinctively get the sense of what they're doing and just start reacting with the mental and physical toughness you've cultivated.

I personally think it takes longer to build this physical style and is actually easier to transition to a spread, softer scheme than the other way around. Pruitt is going to remain stubborn with his offensive philosophy because it has a direct bearing on the defensive style of play from the time of opponent's offensive possession, the number of plays on the field, to finally making their azz quit. When it kicks in and it will, nobody is going to want to sword fight these guys for 4 quarters.

Had you taken the time to comprehend what i and others are saying you would understand every reasonable person has said he gets 3-5 years minimum. So you can hang that straw man in your garden.
Pruitt has a shorter window to prove the team is improving with fans. Our buy in is more tenuous than the administration. Good news for me, i believe the UGA game showed improved defense.

It's a healthy perspective you offer. Pruitt could have shown a more 'competitive' team by playing to our team 'strengths' but sticking with his guns and implementing his scheme is best long term.

I think the team is fighting and learning to play hard for 60 minutes. Although I hate to say it after a pretty lopsided score in Athens, there were signs of improvement last week, esp on defense and on the O-line.

The one thing that stands out to me is that we have made a LOT of mistakes, thus far. Stupid (and repeated) penalties, turnovers, missed opportunities on offense (not seeing open receivers, not checking into plays when the defense gives them, etc). . . . It's a new staff, and it's CJP's first time as the top-dog, so we have to give them some leeway. Barring some catastrophe, he's getting at least three years to right the ship.

He said from the beginning that it would be tough, but he would stick to his system/plan. I think it will pay off, maybe even by the later games this year (if we can stay healthy).

the quote i remember most is one taken from practice "we're gonna get beat, but we're gonna get beat doing it my way".

people thinking there's a bunch of tweaking to be done to win a game or two this season, aren't paying attention.

this season is about establishing an identity and culture and developing players to them.

and hopefully we'll find ourselves in a few games we can win down the stretch. i would like to see what this staff does when a game that "matters" might be on the line in the 4th qtr. and i think this staff probably needs to experience that as well.

If development was linear and our improvements continue, we have a toe to toe chance with mizz, scar, and vandy.

Correct, it's just fewer shortcuts along the harder path. Fans over here have openly wondered why didn't we hire Mark Stoops? You did, in a lot of ways, they just don't know it. Ever wonder why it's taken this long for Stoops to put a team like this together? Because he coaches in Kentucky. He has changed the culture and physical style some time ago, but unless you were bouncing a round-ball in gym shorts these behemoth linemen that run like the wind weren't coming. It has taken a while but just look at the DL and OL and depth he has cultivated. He's not suddenly good, he's getting better recruits. No smoke and mirrors with championship teams.

Pruitt ain't at Kentucky. These near death practices and relentless style will change the culture and fortunately for Tennessee, players will always come sooner rather than later. And a helluva lot faster than that team just north of you.

People have a few redeemable qualities and these days we can use all we got. But patient ain't one of them. That's mostly what's going on over here and frankly, everywhere else. Everyone wants success yesterday. This is going to be a project. But some football programs take a whole lot longer than others.

Could part of it be playing the #2 ranked team in the country? Everyone else playing them is also getting blown up. Perhaps this team at its best, after its best practice ever, is still not going to beat GA? Not with the talent we have, at least.

What I saw while in Athens yesterday helps me understand why Lane Kiffin secreted himself away from Knoxville in the middle of the night. He knew something...................
SMDH, but this football program is pretty dang frustrating.
He knew that he hated Knoxville and his wife did as well. And he wanted to be the USC coach in LA where no one knew him or cared who he was. Nothing more.

Can you comprehend that 3 more years of losing would make the situation worse not better? You think anyone would want to come work for this group, the short list would be very short? After that last hiring fiasco, done blow by blow on the front pages, we are damaged goods. We had a chance to get a good coach by forking up the dough, now that is off the table. CJP will be here until the end of his contract or until he decides to go elsewhere.

And he wanted to be.....where no one knew him or cared who he was.

You must be kidding. Kiffin is one of the biggest attention-whores in existence, in a profession not otherwise noted for wallflowers.

He went to LA because he wanted to be the big fish in the biggest pond, not (in his mind) a provincial backwater like Knoxville.

So what exactly do you think we should do?

I dont follow you at all here. If we lose a lot of games over the next 3 years, then the CJP experiment closes and we start over again.
I have no evidence to suggest we are damaged goods. None. I do have evidence to suggest we have had inept leadership both in the university and through donors which has brought us to this point.
