Pruitt must prove it

I'm optimistic in Pruitt..

This team is going through a major overhaul.. As much as I wanted, it wasn't going to happen this season. Sometimes I think we hear but don't listen.. Or at least I do.

When Pruitt first saw the team on the field with Fulmer.. He was like.. Where's the big guys? Fast forward to the spring game.. So many players not playing in that game related to injuries.. Fulmer makes a comment during that game.. "it will take a couple of years to get the right kind of players in here to be on the level of the Alabama's and Georgia's.." Fulmer recognized it that day at first practice himself and echoed it during the spring game.

Now we all like to compare.. So let's pick Stoops at Kentucky.. His administration has not give up on him.. Slowly he has his team finally.. It has taken a long time to build.. But he has it.. Stoops needed his players and to change that team.. Now he and his team is doing very well..

I see improvement with this team.. They are progressing.. Slowly.. And slower than I personally wanted, but I go back a listen to comments about how long it will take.. And I am now understanding what I chose not to see in the beginning.. It will take time.

As much as I hate the word process.. But it is just that..

We (my work) has had some bad management for several years.. We have a new manager that no one likes.. Hard nosed manager that doesn't except excuses for things not being done.. But troubleshoots and teaches what the break downs are.. Some employees are slow to except.. It's changing how they work.. Some are being forced to work actually.. But after a couple months.. You can see changes.. And what seemed impossible at first.. Is possible now.. We have a long ways to go.. Some are buying in and some are quitting.. But I do see change..

Defense is seemingly settling down and playing there assignments.. They didn't give up and kept after Georgia.. And remember, Georgia is a seasoned team.. Although they lost players last year.. The players that where 2nd and 3rd rotated in and have been with Smart a couple of years.. It's hard to put a finger on the Oline.. They didn't practice as a cohesive unit until a week or so before WV.. And we had injuries to the center position.. Most all expert opinion saw it take time for a oline to gel, so take Georgia for example.. How many games have their oline unit played together? We haven't had that luxury as of yet.. We need Pruitt to bring in a haul of oline this cycle.. It's a must.. But they will need time to gel themselves... So you can see where it's a process based on that..

Anyway.. Pruitt is the guy in my opinion that will make this team competitive.. But he needs support and time.. When positives start happening.. It can be contagious..

All I got! GoVols!

Please ask some more leading questions...

Im interested in how others are seeing improvement or not. If you dont want to participate, im completely comfortable with that. If you dont like the premise of the thread, ask the questions you want feedback on. Post links to other threads, maybe.
If you'll notice, there has been zero argument from me and no petty name calling. I dont have problems if others have different opinions than me.

I saw an opening of the playbook on offense. The defense got into the backfield before the ball was released. Whatever went down with Sapp last week, he played so whatever needed to happen there got done. Those were positive things that I saw. At this point, it looks like SC and Vandy are our best chances for SEC wins. I want to see how we play those games and Missouri and how we do on early signing day before move too far off my spot. Of course, a win against AU or Bama would probably scramble my brain and make me think we'll win out.
Are you talking about the deeper passes on offense? The wildcat with Juaun?

I posted my thoughts already. But you'd know that if you read any of the dozens threads about the game and what everyone thinks about it.

The book on CJP as UT HC is being written. I am not a blind devotee because of his DC prowess. A HC has to do more than simply coach Xs and Os. This season will be extremely challenging. I predicted us to finish 4-8. For me to buy in fully on CJP i want to see, at minimum, a team 1. prepared, 2. enthusiastic, and 3. improving.

I have been critical of what I've seen in games 1-4. No need to rehash it here. Even though watching UGA handle us with relative ease is always painful, I believe there was improvement.

Where did you see improvement?
Where are we still sucking wind?
Any of you who are in "wait and see" mode, does the improvement move CJP up a rung on the ladder of buy in for you?
What all does a head coach do?

I suspect that there is a learning curve with head coaches as well as players all thrown in the blender at basically the same time. Would Coach P. do a few things differently? Probably so even with just 5 games under his belt. I'll take what I am seeing. He does not seem to have a problem being to the point. As long as he does not pick up the habits of his predecessor...……………..

Still wait and see. He hasn’t yet put a product on the field that convinces me he’s the guy. 5 games in and we have 3 illegal formation penalties in a row during a punt? Going for 2 when 1 would put you 2 scores down with a TD and FG to tie it up? Both are inexcusable HS mistakes.
It was 24-0 when we scored the first td. 24-7 is 2 TD's and a FG to tie.

24-8 is 2 TD's and 2 two pt conversions to tie.

I don't know that it was a good call or right call, but I didn't really have an issue with it. Just another opportunity to show confidence in the players, regardless of outcome.

No improvement in defense? Dline? Also, Kongbo was mentioned a lot on the radio broadcast. Maybe his lights are turning on???

I mentioned Taylor. He stood out.

Kongbo and Kirkland had some pretty glaring missed tackles during the game.

Warrior blew a chance at an interception. Another game with no forced turnovers. If they pull an upset this season they are going to have to win the turnover battle.

Not on the defense but they got dinged 3 times early because they couldn't properly line up for a punt.

Georgia was 8 for 14 on 3rd down and the defense couldn't get off the field. Combine that with a feckless offensive effort the first half and it led to 37 min of possession time for GA. 250 yards rushing allowed to the Dawgs and they just dominated the 4th quarter.

Fromm was 17-24 and yet it didn't feel like he was hitting on all cylinders. Frankly, this game felt more like a scrimmage for UGA to work on their running game than anything so I am not buying the drastic improvement narrative of a few on here.

This was a good post. Also in 10 years I haven't seen a true 2 or 3 deep line We got a head coach that knows what it takes in the SEC he just needs time.

Pruitt is implementing his system even before he has the proper players for it. Good strategy?
The way I see it yes it is a GOOD strategy. In order to build for the future you have to start now. The Freshmen and Sophomores need to learn the system this year.
That way, next year they will know the system and they can help bring the much need Freshmen along faster. If the entire team is still learning the system next year,
we are no better off than we were this year. JMHO It means not being as good as we could be with the right players for the system but we weren't going to be great this year.
We simply dont have enough of the right players. I do see a lot of heart in this team. Much more than last year. GO VOLS!

What all does a head coach do?
Complete oversight of the football program plus media availability. I'm confident every decision goes through CJP.

I think i poorly worded my post you quoted. How bout: the HC is responsible for much more than only Xs and Os.

The toughest part of listening rather than watching is Kessling/Priest dont usually call out the player by name when they have a glaring mistake.
I guess I'm not critiquing as much because of the talent and depth of UGA compared to us. The matchup with UF and WVU was much more balanced, imo.

Agreed. I would rather him implement his system from the beginning to shorten the learning curve in the future.

Well he has done all the other stuff. X's and O's is all that matter to most.

I dont agree. Like i said in my op, there are things through 4 games which are concerning. But there's no need rehashing. I believe he took a step forward in his OJT of head coaching at Georgia.

It was sassy, but it was kinda funny, and jake liked it too.
Twasnt intended to be sassy. I simply havent as much time to scour through threads like last few weekends.

Personally.. I think it is necessary.. Think about all the issues or obstacles it takes to build a team.. I don't think Pruitt can waste any time honestly.

I keep thinking about the WVU game.. Pruitt put freshman DBs back there knowing WVU could light it up.. I am now wondering if he wasn't as much worried about the win in the first game as he was getting those guys true experience to learn from.. Idk.. Just a thought I have had.. Pruitt has to quickly build for next year.. He also has to get top level recruits in.. That is not easy at this point.. Then develop those guys.. A big part of me thinks Pruitts focus this year is to mold the clay for next year.. I know he wants to win.. But I believe he is focusing on laying that clay down to be worked with at the moment..
