The night of the signing-day party, when Tyson Helton said we are going to line up and run the ball and play action, ALL of VolNation, and the fan base, were pumped out of our minds to hear that. We were so sick of seeing spread, shotgun, clap your hands...we were screaming for a straightforward attack. And now that Helton is giving us EXACTLY what we wanted, SOME are ready to run him out of town.
Not only are they trying to install a new offense, but a new identity/culture. This is who they want to be, who WE wanted them to be. Unfortunately, as my brother puts it, "you can't win the Kentucky Derby with a bunch of damn donkeys".
So, we have to ask ourselves: do we try something new to try and mask our flaws, with no guarantee of success, and get away from what we want this program and offense to be, going forward...
Or, do we stick to what we want to do, take our tail-kickings and lumps, to establish what Tennessee Football is going to be going forward, our foundation, our culture, lining up and running the football, and play-action...that's who Jeremy Pruitt and Tyson Helton want to be, and EXACTLY who we wanted them to be.
I think there's been very clear improvement on defense. They were put in horrible positions against FL. Barring major injuries, I think they will be pretty decent by the end of the year. Our defense indeed sucks, but its not quite as bad as the score indicated. I think it could be middling SEC next year if the new DL can contribute. As for the offense, I have absolutely no hope in it for the time being.
@SugarCC i posted this earlier and your post reminded me of it.oh, i agree, and to that point, i think that may be one thing you can probably blame Helton on, specifically, not having the experience to "coach around defficiencies". i do think we're a bit hamstrung play calling wise because of the o line issues.
that doesn't mean you curl up and do nothing different......lol. he's a smart guy, and by all accounts, has a great offensive mind.
i think one pitfall this staff might have is simply that they know what htey know, and they know what it looks like when it's done well.
i'm not sure how many of these guys have ever had to take a rag tag group and either get them to the point their functional at what this staff wants to do, or coach to the level of what the player is capable of.
also, i'm not convinced they should. this wasn't going to be a great year, you inherited what you inherited. you do need to establish an identity, and start building using your process. and sometimes being disciplined about that can be a good thing. but there's a fine line where "disciplined" and "stubborn" start to look like the same thing.
Big difference is how this staff recruits and why.
Well if witten said that he’s the one that made it political. The comment doesn’t even make sense. Our society is getting crazy. Jason Witten is catching some flak for calling the new roughing the passer rule as "a little too left wing." ESPN had to release a comment and said it had nothing to do with politics. So, this has nothing to do with politics.
The UGA game will be telling. If the Vols bounce back, play like they have something on the line and don't roll over and get crushed, then people will feel a little better. But if the team is unfocused, mistake-prone and looks unprepared, discontent will grow. Losing is one thing; getting totally humiliated week after week is another.
Pruitt hired Helton because he trusted him to run the offense while he focused more on the defense. If he's gotten more hands-on, when that really isn't his forte, then the dynamic has changed. I'm sure there's a lot of tension right now, but I still don't give credence to the playsheet rumors. Can't keep things like that quiet with media people everywhere and cameras and binoculars pointed right at the sidelines. Just ask Pruitt's whiteboard.
We need to stop acting like Mullen has pulled off some great achievement already. He beat a 4-8 team that practically gave him the game. He lost to UK for the first time in 31 years, in Gainesville. I think he'll be fine long-term, but this season is far from over, and I think UF has a lot of tough days ahead.
The Basilio rumor story is likely BS, IMO. That is to generate clicks and stir the pot in order to generate more clicks in the future. I don't think the offensive play-calling was great on Saturday, but it should not have been a surprise to anyone. We tried to establish the run, which was not just a Helton thing. That is also a big Pruitt thing. When you've turned the ball over 5 times in the first half, I don't think it's smart to start chucking the ball around 90% of the time. Personally, I think the OL laid a big egg and just got out-played.
I have had hope that all coaches from Clawson to Pruitt would come in, right the ship, and lead us back to similar success like we had from 1989-2007. I still do, but I am being numbed from the pain with every failure. It is interesting and I’d like to hear as many opinions as possible on this:
Has Jeremy Pruitt gotten the same buy in from Tennessee fans that our previous coaches received? Of course we all support him and wish him well, but it seems like as a whole, the fan base is sticking to the “prove it” narrative and up to this point it feels like we are much more neutral on him.
Am I off base here?
Ha, we’re gonna get destroyedThe UGA game will be telling. If the Vols bounce back, play like they have something on the line and don't roll over and get crushed, then people will feel a little better. But if the team is unfocused, mistake-prone and looks unprepared, discontent will grow. Losing is one thing; getting totally humiliated week after week is another.
The O we ran Saturday is never gonna work. I feel we get more of the same on SaturdayTo be fair, you don't need play sheets to call two up the middle runs on first and second down during most series. CJP has a headset - he can change the play calling in about two seconds. He didn't. So the question that matters is "why"? Was too busy with the D to spend any time on it? Did he give up on the O and ran the ball to eat clock? Did he give up on pass blocking or JG to find open receivers?
It is 3 full days removed from that disaster and I still cannot make any sense out of what I saw, especially on O. The D deficiency was all player execution. Play some different guys if you cannot get the ones you are playing to do what the scheme and call demands. Give maximum effort and wrap up on tackles for a change. But the O - everything was off and bad.
