Recruiting Forum Football Talk [RIP 9.3.2019]

I've been saying this for years, at least since the Pig Howard fumble. Yet, maybe I'm wrong. I mean, if a rule was so ridiculously bad, as I think it is, why after all this time has there apparently not even been discussion about changing it, other than amongst Vol fans of course?

I think it's simple. If it goes out of the back of the end zone that means the defense didn't get a chance to recover it.
If it goes out of the side return it to the spot of the fumble and give it to the offense. Can't reward the defense by allowing the offense to near the goal line

If I had a football time machine, I wouldn't fire Fulmer and let him see if he could have improved the team with Claw-fence, Petty and Tahj Boyd.

What a great what-if... I remember him having a pretty good class on the line.

F@&$ing Mike Hamilton should have let Fulmer replace Cut with whoever he wanted instead of forcing him to go outside his coaching tree.

From a poster in the Footbal Forum. Pretty much sums it up:

The upperclassmen have been babied to death for so long under Butch.

Pruitt is a straight shooter who’s not there to hold their hand.

I say some of them probably don’t like it and if that’s the case, screw’em.

We want winners, not players who keep feeling sorry for themselves.

"IF" that's true, we need to have some house cleaning after the season.

I don’t keep up with a lot NFL. For those that do,quick question. Is Dobbs qb 2 for the Steelers? Wasn’t sure of his status.

Sorry, bud. Going to 11 of the 13 games in 1998 was an awesome thing. I will never forget it.
I didn't make 7 but i did make the Auburn, SECCG and National Title. Heck was one of the best road trips ever, going through New Orleans and watching the Sugar Bowl then driving to Arizona.

Awesome. I was in the student section for the home games and traveled to Auburn and UGA. Good times.

Okay.

I begrudgingly went to see the alma mater play South Alabama with a group of friends. I knew I was going to miss the Florida game, but it was probably for the best. I followed the box score updates sparingly, which was enough to know it was a sh!tshow.

Yesterday, I ignored all sports outside of fantasy football, where my Cam Newton-->Christian McCaffery connection is tearing it up. I did see a couple of things about Sapp getting sent to the locker room, a late hit on JG, and all-around reactionary doom and gloom. I also saw the drive chart that started Fumble, INT, Punt, Safety, Crap, Crap, Crap all the way down.

Only now did I subject myself to the longest "highlight" video I could find available on YouTube. Yes, it did look bad. (It also sounded really bad, who's the boy scout that called the game? He's more generic than the commentators you'd hear on video games. Awful.) I did see some pressure from the DL. I saw some good runs. I saw competence in spots. It was just heavily outweighed by our bedwettings that Florida was able to take advantage of.

This is the first I've been to VN since Saturday morning. I'm not going to read through 1500 posts to catch up.

Unofficial poll, choose A, B, or C if you could:

A) We're only going to beat Charlotte now, and CJP's overall trajectory with Tennessee has dipped.

B) We may only beat Charlotte and maybe Vandy or something from here on out, but it's always darkest before dawn, and we should be patient with Pruitt. We'll still be alright in a couple/few years.

C) Florida was a fluke. They came out ready, and we crapped the bed under a lot of pressure. We still have a puncher's chance against Carolina/Mizzou/Kentucky/Vandy, and may still be able to get to a bowl game. We're on track, it was an ugly game.

Edit:

D) People who answer this are either too mentally exhausted, can't think critically, or think they're utilizing an edgy brand of humor.

Banks needs to be short yardage back. I don't care about his fumbles. He moves the pile unlike any other back and just hits the hole how you are supposed to. He is a back that can make your OL look better than it is.

There need some to be changes on OL. Maybe not in who the top 8 are but in where they are playing. Jahmir is a T not a G in SEC play. He can play G vs mid majors. Trey is a G not a T; his personality is at G. Would love to see a Hall LT/Smith LG/Johnson C/ Carvin RG/Johnson RT or move Richmond inside to RG or LT and put Locklear at RG with carvin/Johnson at RT. Either way get trey inside and smashing people

In b4 Chief says A...

Since it's about JG now - I posted this line of thought previously like a few posters - he has nearly zero pocket awareness. If the pocket forms around him he will stay in it and throws the ball well. However, he rarely steps up or laterally to adjust. That means the blockers need to be nearly flawless. When they are not and he doesn't adjust bad things have happened. Add in he simply cannot read D's pre-snap and is mediocre reading coverages this season. He still misses wide open guys because he doesn't think/read his progressions quickly enough. Everything that is happening is tied together.

There are others ways to do the job. Contrast him to Dobbs. Dobbs had great pocket awareness. He looked for two receivers and if nothing found a lane to run either by coaches instruction or instinct, probably the later, because of a mediocre to poor O-line. He was good at pre-snap reads and mediocre at coverage until he got to the NFL and had a real QB coach. Look at Bray even. He would drift laterally and step up or back to stay protected. He was decent at pre-snap reads and good at coverage. He succeeded despite limited mobility because of those abilities plus the big arm behind a quality O-line. He also had a real QB coach. They are two back-up NFL QB's who played for two sorry HC's - so it can be done in any system/scheme.

Have you ever seen any real pocket awareness, pre-snap read ability or strong ability to read coverages in JG yet? Nope. Can't blame it on Helton - he's proved he knows what he's doing with QB's. None was shown under Butch. It doesn't appear to be a natural skillset with him. There still may be time for it to develop if they are willing to let him potentially get messed up for life while losing nearly every game behind a makeshift O-line. Maybe they are. But if it was me calling the shots Chryst would be in there and I would be placing my future success on the shoulders of Shrout and Mauer. Chryst is stronger, knows what he sees quicker, is mobile, and is a rental in a total rebuilding year. There's rarely time for the longer routes that may benefit from JG's arm.

Bump...for any of the late night folks (like myself) who may not have read this earlier in the morning.

Between A and B, but that's where I've been the whole time.

I was bearish on Coach 2018 before they even started the hiring process. Percentages suggest Coach 2018 wouldn't be the guy no matter who he turned out to be (outside of a couple of very unrealistic coaches).

Maybe Pruitt can get it done. He'll have three years no matter what (barring legal trouble), so I'll support him while he's here. Hopefully it's north of a decade and we're rolling again.
